Pediatric Hematology Oncology Physician Assistant

Position Overview

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) will be engaged in a role at the outpatient clinic focusing on hematologic conditions affecting children, including but not limited to sickle cell disease, chronic transfusion therapy, general hematology, bone marrow failures, and bleeding disorders. This APP will work closely with a diverse team within the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology division to deliver comprehensive care to pediatric patients managing various hematologic conditions.

Work Schedule: Monday to Friday (no weekends or on-call duties)

Qualifications and Education

· A Master's degree or higher in nursing, with proof of completion from an accredited Advanced Practice Education Program. Graduate education and Texas Board of Nursing authorization must align with the clinical practice area and patient demographic. OR

· Graduation from a Master's degree or higher from an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) accredited Physician Assistant program.

· Experience in pediatric hematology oncology is preferred.

· New graduates who have completed a pediatric oncology clinical rotation or possess prior nursing experience may be considered.

Licensure/Certification Requirements

· Licensure as a primary or acute care (CPNP-AC) Pediatric Advanced Practice Registered Nurse by the Texas State Board of Nursing, with authorization for prescriptive authority. OR

· Licensed by the Texas Physician Assistant Board (PA-C). AND

· Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications from the American Heart Association or Red Cross, as per UT Southwestern policies for Advanced Practice Providers.

Key Responsibilities

· Conduct and document thorough initial and ongoing physical assessments based on age and diagnosis, including psychological evaluations.

· Integrate data and utilize evidence-based practices to formulate, implement, and assess the patient care plan, including ordering and interpreting laboratory, radiology, and other diagnostic tests.

· Exhibit proficiency in technical and procedural skills relevant to the specialty and training.

· Provide management, referrals, counseling, and education to patients, families, and caregivers regarding current care and preventive health strategies.

· Engage in quality improvement initiatives through structured group processes, workshops, seminars, and team meetings to enhance clinical and operational performance.

· Collaborate on research projects and protocols, consistently applying evidence-based best practices to patient care.

· Perform additional duties as assigned.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

· Strong accuracy and the ability to exercise sound judgment.

· Capacity to maintain up-to-date customer service, clinical, and technical competencies.

· Ability to identify opportunities for improvement in departmental policies, procedures, and protocols.

· Proficient in using Electronic Medical Records (EMR) in patient care delivery.

Work Environment

The role is primarily conducted in a clinical setting, with potential exposure to body fluids and infectious diseases.

This position is security-sensitive and subject to regulations allowing for the review of criminal history records.
