POSITION SUMMARY:


A Clinical Nutrition Specialist in training, possessing less than one year of clinical experience, will collaborate closely with a certified dietitian.

Under the direct guidance of an experienced renal dietitian, this role will deliver nutritional support for both in-center and home patients, gaining essential experience required by CMS until the completion of the clinical experience necessary to qualify as a dietitian.


This position actively engages in process enhancement initiatives to improve the likelihood that patients will meet their individualized health objectives as outlined by their healthcare provider.

The Dietitian in training will not be authorized to conduct patient evaluations, formulate care plans, or oversee QAPI program assessments.

Working under the direct supervision of a company Registered Dietitian (with a minimum of three years' experience in renal nutrition).

Upholds the FMCNA commitment to the Quality Enhancement Program (QEP).

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Drive the organizational culture through core values and customer service excellence.
  • Ensure exceptional service delivery to all internal and external stakeholders.
  • Foster and maintain productive relationships through timely and effective communication.
  • Proactively address, resolve, and follow up on customer service inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Calculate dietary prescriptions in accordance with established standards.
  • Assess patients' understanding of dietary needs and kidney health.
  • Complete Nutrition History documentation with patients for use by CMS-qualified dietitians in assessments.
  • Provide tailored educational resources to patients, families, and caregivers regarding nutritional health, fluid management, and relevant laboratory results, considering the patient's learning preferences.

Nutrition Monitoring:
Engage with patients and/or caregivers to develop appropriate strategies to support optimal nutritional health.

Communicate laboratory findings and recommended treatment adjustments to the interdisciplinary team as necessary.

Coordinate with physicians and facility personnel regarding lab results as appropriate.

Share lab findings and suggested treatment modifications with patient care providers in various healthcare settings.

Monitor compliance and response to nutritional interventions, addressing barriers to achieving health goals.

  • Review each patient's albumin levels and body weight monthly. Identify patients at risk for malnutrition and collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to determine suitable interventions.
  • When applicable, recommend patients for nutritional supplement referrals based on disease management protocols.
  • Assist in managing patients' fluid and volume needs.
  • Provide education on fluid and sodium intake as necessary.
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team on managing mineral metabolism, renal bone health, anemia, nutritional status, psychosocial factors, vascular access, treatment modalities, rehabilitation, and sodium/volume control.
  • Participate in Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement meetings alongside a CMS-qualified dietitian.
  • Attend relevant staff meetings as required.
  • Ensure a safe and clean working environment in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
  • Work with the interdisciplinary team on pharmacy-related tasks, including setup and management.
  • Engage in community outreach initiatives.
  • Educate patients on emergency preparedness concerning nutrition.
  • Conduct staff training sessions as needed.
  • Adhere to FMCNA protocols and medical record policies.


  • Maintain and enhance knowledge and skills for a competent and innovative practice.
  • Uphold dietetic registration and continuing education requirements as mandated by the American Dietetic Association and state regulations.
  • Perform additional nutrition-related duties as assigned.
  • Escalate issues to supervisors for resolution when necessary.
  • Assist with various projects as directed by immediate supervisors.
  • Carry out other related responsibilities as assigned.

EDUCATION AND CREDENTIALS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Nutrition or a closely related field; Master's degree preferred.
  • Registered Dietitian credential from the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
  • Current state licensure as applicable.
