POSITION SUMMARY:


A Clinical Nutrition Specialist in training, possessing less than one year of clinical experience, will collaborate closely with a certified dietitian.

Under the guidance of an experienced renal dietitian, this role will deliver nutritional services to both in-center and home patients, aiming to acquire the necessary experience mandated by CMS until the completion of the required clinical experience to qualify as a dietitian.


This position actively engages in process enhancement initiatives to improve the likelihood that patients will meet their individualized health objectives as outlined by their healthcare provider.

The Dietitian in training will not be authorized to conduct patient evaluations, formulate care plans, or oversee QAPI program assessments.

Under the direct mentorship of a company Registered Dietitian (who has a minimum of three years' experience in renal nutrition), this role supports the FMCNA commitment to the Quality Enhancement Program (QEP).

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Foster the company culture through core values and exceptional customer service standards.
  • Ensure exemplary customer service for all external and internal stakeholders.
  • Cultivate and sustain effective relationships through timely and clear communication.
  • Proactively address, resolve, and follow up on customer service inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Calculate dietary prescriptions in accordance with established standards of practice.
  • Assess patients' understanding of dietary needs and kidney health.
  • Complete Nutrition History forms with patients for use by CMS-qualified dietitians during assessments.
  • Provide tailored educational support to patients, families, and caregivers regarding nutritional status, adequacy measures, fluid management, and relevant laboratory parameters related to their health conditions, considering the learning preferences of each patient.

Nutrition Monitoring and Collaboration:
Evaluate and discuss lab results with patients and caregivers, developing appropriate strategies to assist patients in achieving and maintaining optimal nutritional health.

Communicate lab findings and suggested treatment modifications to the interdisciplinary team as necessary.

Engage with physicians and facility staff regarding lab results as appropriate.

Relay lab findings and recommended treatment adjustments to healthcare providers in various care settings (e.g., hospitals, short-term and long-term care facilities).

Monitor adherence to nutrition therapy and address any barriers impacting the patient's ability to reach their goals.

  • Review each patient's albumin levels and body weight on a monthly basis. Identify patients at risk for malnutrition and collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to determine suitable interventions and resources. Involve patients and their families in setting improvement goals.
  • When appropriate, identify candidates for referral to physicians for nutritional supplements as per disease management protocols.
  • Assist in managing fluid and volume levels for patients.
  • Provide education on fluid and sodium management as necessary.
  • Work with the interdisciplinary team on managing and recommending strategies for mineral metabolism, renal bone health, anemia, nutritional status, psychosocial factors, vascular access, treatment modalities, rehabilitation, and sodium/volume control.
  • Participate in Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement meetings alongside a CMS-qualified dietitian.
  • Attend relevant staff meetings as required.
  • Ensure all work areas are safe and clean through collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
  • Engage in pharmacy-related responsibilities with the interdisciplinary team, including setup, enrollment, and management.
  • Participate in community outreach initiatives.
  • Educate patients on emergency preparedness related to nutrition.
  • Conduct staff training sessions as needed or requested.
  • Adhere to FMCNA protocols and medical record policies.


  • Continuously enhance knowledge and skills for a competent and innovative practice.
  • Maintain dietetic registration and complete continuing education hours as mandated by the American Dietetic Association and applicable state licensure regulations.
  • Undertake additional nutrition service responsibilities as assigned.
  • Escalate issues to supervisors for resolution when necessary.
  • Assist with various projects as directed by the immediate supervisor.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND CREDENTIALS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Nutrition or a closely related field; Master's degree preferred.
  • Registered Dietitian certification as per the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
  • Current state licensure as applicable.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

  • Less than one year of clinical experience.
