POSITION SUMMARY:
A Clinical Nutrition Specialist in training, possessing less than one year of clinical experience, will collaborate closely with a licensed dietitian.
Under the direct oversight of a qualified renal dietitian, this role will deliver nutritional services to both in-center and home patients, aiming to acquire the necessary experience mandated by CMS until the completion of the required clinical experience to qualify as a dietitian.
Actively engages in process enhancement initiatives to improve the likelihood that patients will meet their personalized health objectives as established by their healthcare provider.
The Dietitian in training is not authorized to conduct patient evaluations, formulate care plans, or assume responsibility for QAPI program assessments.
Under the direct supervision of a company Registered Dietitian (an employee with a minimum of three years' experience in renal nutrition).
Upholds the FMCNA commitment to the Quality Enhancement Program (QEP).KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Champions the company culture through adherence to values and customer service standards.
- Ensures exceptional customer service for all external and internal stakeholders.
- Fosters and maintains effective relationships through timely and clear communication.
- Takes proactive measures to address, resolve, and follow up on customer service inquiries promptly.
- Calculates dietary prescriptions in accordance with established standards of practice.
- Assesses patients' understanding of dietary needs related to kidney health.
- Completes Nutrition History documentation with patients for use by CMS-qualified dietitians in assessments.
- Provides tailored educational support to patients, families, and caregivers regarding nutritional status, adequacy measures, fluid management, and relevant laboratory parameters, considering the patient's learning preferences.
LAB RESULTS REVIEW:
Advises patients and/or caregivers and formulates appropriate strategies to help patients achieve and maintain optimal nutritional health.
Communicates laboratory findings and suggested treatment modifications to the interdisciplinary team as necessary.
Engages with physicians and/or facility personnel regarding lab results as appropriate.
Informs patient care providers in nursing facilities (including hospitals and long-term care settings) about lab results and recommended changes.
Monitors adherence to and effectiveness of nutritional therapies, addressing any barriers to achieving patient goals.
- Reviews each patient's albumin levels and body weight at least monthly, identifying malnourished patients and those at risk for malnutrition, and collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to determine suitable interventions and resources. Involves patients, families, and caregivers in goal-setting.
- When appropriate, identifies candidates for referral to physicians for nutritional supplements as per disease management protocols.
- Assists with fluid and volume management for patients.
- Provides education on fluid and sodium intake as needed.
- Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team on management strategies for mineral metabolism, renal bone disease, anemia, nutritional status, psychosocial aspects, vascular access, treatment modalities, rehabilitation, and sodium/volume control.
- Participates in Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement meetings and Plan of Care discussions with a CMS-qualified dietitian.
- Attends relevant staff meetings as required.
- Ensures that all work areas are safe and clean through collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
- Works with the interdisciplinary team on pharmacy-related responsibilities, including setup, enrollment, and management.
- Engages in community outreach initiatives.
- Educates patients on emergency preparedness related to nutrition.
- Conducts staff training sessions as needed or requested.
- Adheres to FMCNA protocols and medical record policies.
- Continually enhances knowledge and skills for a competent and innovative practice.
- Maintains dietetic registration and continuing education hours as mandated by the American Dietetic Association and applicable state licensure regulations.
- Performs additional nutrition service duties as assigned.
- Escalates issues to supervisors for resolution as necessary.
- Assists with various projects as directed by direct supervisors.
- Executes other related responsibilities as assigned.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:

- Daily responsibilities include desk work and personal computer use, along with interaction with patients, facility staff, and healthcare providers.
- The position may require travel between assigned facilities and various community locations. Attendance at training clinics, as well as regional, Business Unit, and Corporate meetings, may be necessary.

EDUCATION AND CREDENTIALS:
- Bachelor's degree in Nutrition or a closely related field; Master's degree preferred.
- Registered Dietitian credential from the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
- Current state licensure, if applicable.
EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:
- Less than one year of clinical experience.
