POSITION SUMMARY:


A Clinical Nutrition Specialist in training, possessing less than one year of hands-on clinical experience, will collaborate closely with a certified dietitian.

Under the direct oversight of an experienced renal dietitian, this role is dedicated to delivering nutritional care for both in-center and home patients, acquiring the necessary experience mandated by CMS until the completion of the required clinical experience to qualify as a dietitian.


Actively engages in initiatives aimed at process enhancement to improve the chances of patients reaching their personalized health objectives as outlined by their healthcare provider.

The Dietitian in training is not authorized to conduct patient evaluations, formulate care plans, or oversee QAPI program assessments.

Works under the direct supervision of a company Registered Dietitian with a minimum of three years of renal dietitian experience.

Supports the FMCNA commitment to the Quality Enhancement Program (QEP).

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Upholds the company culture through adherence to values and customer service excellence.
  • Ensures exceptional service delivery to all internal and external stakeholders.
  • Cultivates and sustains effective relationships through timely and clear communication.
  • Takes proactive measures to address, resolve, and follow up on customer service inquiries promptly.
  • Computes dietary prescriptions in accordance with established practice standards.
  • Assesses patients' understanding of dietary needs and kidney health.
  • Completes Nutrition History documentation with patients for use by CMS-qualified dietitians in assessments.
  • Provides tailored educational support to patients, families, and caregivers regarding nutritional status, adequacy measures, fluid management, and relevant lab results, considering individual learning preferences.

Nutrition Lab Result Review:
Advises patients and/or caregivers and develops suitable strategies to help patients maintain and improve their nutritional health.

Communicates lab findings and suggested treatment modifications to the interdisciplinary team as necessary.

Coordinates with physicians and facility personnel regarding lab results as appropriate.

Shares lab findings and recommended treatment adjustments with healthcare providers in various care settings.

Monitors adherence to nutrition therapy and addresses challenges affecting the patient's ability to meet their health goals.

  • Evaluates each patient's albumin levels and body weight monthly. Identifies patients at risk for malnutrition and collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to determine suitable interventions and resources. Engages patients and their families in setting improvement goals.
  • When appropriate, identifies patients for referral to physicians for nutritional supplements as per disease management protocols.
  • Assists in managing patients' fluid and volume needs.
  • Provides education on fluid and sodium intake as necessary.
  • Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team on managing mineral metabolism, renal bone health, anemia, nutritional status, psychosocial aspects, vascular access, treatment modalities, rehabilitation, and sodium/volume regulation.
  • Participates in Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement and Plan of Care meetings alongside a CMS-qualified dietitian.
  • Attends relevant staff meetings as required.
  • Ensures a safe and clean working environment in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
  • Works with the interdisciplinary team on pharmacy-related tasks, including setup, enrollment, and management.
  • Engages in community outreach activities.
  • Educates patients on emergency preparedness concerning food and nutrition.
  • Conducts staff training sessions as needed or requested.
  • Adheres to FMCNA protocols and medical record policies.


  • Continuously enhances knowledge and skills for a competent and innovative practice.
  • Maintains dietetic registration and continuing education hours as required by the American Dietetic Association and state licensure regulations where applicable.
  • Performs additional nutrition service duties as assigned.
  • Escalates issues to supervisors for resolution as necessary.
  • Assists with various projects as directed by the immediate supervisor.
  • Carries out other related responsibilities as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

EDUCATION AND CREDENTIALS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Nutrition or a closely related field; Master's degree preferred.
  • Registered Dietitian as recognized by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
  • Current state licensure if applicable.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

  • Less than one year of clinical experience.
