Job Title: Director of Payroll Operations

Acadia Pharmaceuticals is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Director of Payroll Operations to join our team. As a key member of our finance department, you will be responsible for overseeing the entire payroll process, ensuring compliance with federal and multi-state regulations, and providing exceptional service to our employees.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage the semi-monthly payroll processing for a growing, multi-state, and global organization
  • Ensure compliance with federal and multi-state wage and hour regulations and payroll tax filing procedures
  • Interpret company pay policies, including vacation, leave of absence, disability, and workers' compensation
  • Act as the first point of contact for employees with payroll-related concerns and questions
  • Proactively identify and resolve payroll discrepancies and determine the most appropriate method of communication to employees
  • Critically review and analyze current payroll policies to recommend and implement changes leading to best-practice operations
  • Ensure that payroll operations are conducted in accordance with Sarbanes-Oxley internal controls
  • Manage third-party payroll-related vendor relationships, including payroll software, 401(k), and relocation firms
  • Prepare and maintain payroll records and reports, including standard and ad hoc reports
  • Review and reconcile quarterly and annual federal and state payroll tax returns
  • Prepare returns for multiple states and distribute annual W-2s and relevant documents
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business, Finance, Human Resources, or a related field
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant progressive experience in payroll processing, with a focus on commercial biotech organizations with multi-state and global operations
  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) is preferred
  • Strong understanding of federal and multi-state wage and hour regulations and payroll tax filing procedures
  • Strong understanding of payroll for stock-based compensation
  • Payroll subject matter expertise to advise the company on best practices regarding reimbursement of relocation expenses, taxable fringe benefits, and auto allowances
  • Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) compliance experience
  • Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Highly detail-oriented, self-disciplined, and ability to work independently with limited direction to resolve discrepancies and issues
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills to ensure understanding of specific payroll matters
  • Experience in leading payroll process improvements and payroll ERP implementation experience a plus
