An individual will be appointed EITHER as a Building Code Compliance Officer or Code Enforcement Specialist based on qualifications.

Building Code Compliance Officer:

Overview

Accountable for enforcing municipal regulations related to Property Maintenance, Minimum Housing, Single Family, Multi-Family, and Zoning, primarily focusing on residential neighborhoods.

Compensation: $23.29/hour, contingent on qualifications and experience.

Key Responsibilities
  • Address and investigate community concerns.
  • Proactively patrol designated areas to identify code infractions.
  • Issue violation notices, citations, and nuisance abatement work orders for municipal contractors.
  • Enforce minimum housing standards in designated areas and prepare cases for the Property Standards Board, including Notices of Condemnation.
  • Uphold City Ordinances and International Building and Residential Codes through scheduled inspections.
  • Represent the City in legal proceedings as necessary.
Basic Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • No prior experience required
Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to effectively perform the essential functions of the role.

Preferred Qualifications

Education/Experience:
  • 60 college credit hours of advanced training beyond high school in a relevant field.
  • Up to 1 year of experience in code enforcement or a related field.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • General understanding of relevant ordinances, laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Basic knowledge of construction standards and inspection protocols.
  • Ability to adapt quickly and remain flexible in a dynamic work environment.
  • Capacity to maintain organized and precise data.
  • Multi-lingual (Spanish) skills are highly desirable.
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office (including Word, Outlook, Excel).
Licenses and Certifications
  • Registered Texas Code Enforcement Officer* or ability to obtain within 1 year.
  • Texas Real Estate Commission Professional Inspector License, preferred.
  • Valid Class C Texas driver's license.

Physical Requirements / Work Environment

The incumbent works primarily outdoors, with frequent exposure to challenging environmental conditions or hazards. Must be capable of lifting up to 60 lbs and navigating uneven and unpaved surfaces.
