POSITION:
Transportation and Outreach Specialist

JOB SUMMARY:


The Shelter Hotline Program provides essential transportation services to clients seeking shelter and other program locations throughout the year, operating 18-24 hours daily.

Transportation and Outreach Specialists are responsible for driving UPO Shelter Hotline vehicles to transport clients along designated routes and point-to-point service destinations.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Deliver outreach and transportation services to homeless individuals and families to designated shelters in the DC area.
2. Actively canvass the streets of Washington, DC, seeking out homeless or at-risk individuals in need of transportation assistance and comfort items.
3. Ensure that all passengers are securely seated and provided with safety instructions to be followed during transportation in UPO vehicles.
4. Transport and escort clients to and from approved locations, including overnight shelters and other designated destinations as instructed.
5. Maintain communication with hotline dispatchers via two-way radios to obtain resources for assisting at-risk individuals in adverse weather conditions.
6. Collaborate closely with the Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP), as well as local fire and police departments, to facilitate the relocation of clients from the streets to safe shelter environments.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or GED required. A minimum of two years of experience operating a 15-passenger vehicle is necessary. Candidates must possess a valid Class D driver's license and a driving record that does not exceed two points over the past five years.


Applicants should be available to work varied schedules, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and must be able to drive in all weather conditions. Strong geographic knowledge of Washington, DC is essential for effective navigation. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to work sensitively and effectively with individuals from diverse educational, socio-economic, and cultural backgrounds.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (particularly Outlook and Word) and familiarity with electronic time-keeping systems is required. Strong organizational and professional communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential. Candidates should be capable of preparing written reports as needed and must be able to work effectively under pressure, both independently and as part of a team.


DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

First-Aid & CPR certification is preferred. Bilingual candidates, particularly those fluent in Spanish, are encouraged to apply.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:


Selected candidates will be required to successfully complete a criminal background check and/or FBI fingerprinting, as well as pre-employment drug screening, as applicable for the position.


This is a Safety Sensitive position subject to mandatory random drug and alcohol testing.

Additionally, this position requires the incumbent to submit to yearly tuberculosis testing.

This position is part of the collective bargaining unit of the CWA Union.
