Responsibilities:

1. Conduct routine and high complexity tests that the individual has been trained in, appropriate for the testing department and shift.

2. Adhere to laboratory protocols for specimen handling, processing, test analysis, reporting, and maintaining patient result records.

3. Document all corrective actions taken when test processes deviate from established performance specifications. Do not report patient results until all corrective actions have been completed and tests are functioning as expected.

4. Assist with proficiency-testing samples and maintain records demonstrating that proficiency-testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples.

5. Follow laboratory quality control policies; document all control activities, instrument calibrations, and maintenance performed. Execute all quality control as outlined in procedural manuals.

6. Notify the Technical Specialist, Laboratory Manager, Shift Leader, or Charge Tech of any out-of-control situations if the problem cannot be resolved.

7. Identify issues that may negatively impact test performance or reporting of results; either rectify the issue or inform the appropriate personnel if it cannot be resolved.

8. Assist in the orientation, instruction, and evaluation of students and new staff in the department.

9. Prepare various reagents and supplies according to precise formulas as necessary.

10. Utilize the Laboratory Information System (LIS) for patient accessioning and results; monitor incomplete and collection lists.

11. Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment and instruments as specified.

12. Regularly check communication boards for updates.

13. Plan work to ensure maximum productivity while minimizing carryover work and overtime. Responsible for communicating essential information about patient samples or instrument performance to the next shift and relevant staff.

14. Act as a resource for phlebotomy if appropriately trained, including outpatient services.

15. Maintain and disinfect the work area.

16. Assist with the coverage of the pneumatic tube system, processing, and distributing specimens.
