Position Summary:


The individual in this role will be responsible for: collecting and properly managing venous and capillary blood specimens for both inpatients and outpatients, ensuring the safety and comfort of patients, performing clerical and computer tasks, and fulfilling courier duties as necessary.


Responsibilities:
- Assist in the training and orientation of new staff members.

- Accurately collect blood samples from venous and capillary sites as per facility protocols.


- Ensure proper handling of all specimens, including timely transport to the laboratory, adhering to special tube requirements, and maintaining preservation standards without contamination.

- Deliver all specimens to the appropriate laboratory department.


- Correctly identify patients using hospital armbands and by verifying their name and date of birth with them or their family members.

- Utilize the Hollister Ident-A-Band system for labeling blood bank specimens.

- Accurately label all specimens.

- Maintain the phlebotomy tray and work area in a clean and sanitary condition.


- Responsible for the care and maintenance of equipment and supplies, ensuring adequate stock levels and notifying supervisors of any repair or replacement needs.

- Comply with OSHA standards, Universal Precautions, hospital safety manuals, and laboratory policies and procedures.

- Demonstrate knowledge of manual order acquisition when computer systems are down.

- Operate Lab and/or HIS computer systems as appropriate for the facility.


- Regularly check uncollected work lists during shifts and follow up on any uncollected specimens or misplaced orders.

- Answer department phone calls, transfer calls to the correct sections, and look up test results as needed.

- Responsible for accessioning and centrifuging specimens.


- Perform additional duties as required by the facility, including posting billing summaries for physician office accounts, processing laboratory supply orders, receiving and storing stock, mailing and faxing reports to clients, charting laboratory reports, and managing specimen send-outs.

- Local travel may be required.

- Adhere to policies, procedures, and safety standards. Complete required educational assignments annually. Work towards achieving departmental goals and participate in quality improvement initiatives as requested.

- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Minimum Education:


No specific education required; any combination of formal education and/or prior work experience that demonstrates the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform essential job tasks is acceptable, typically equivalent to a high school diploma or GED.

Preference may be given to candidates with a high school diploma or GED.

Minimum Experience:
No prior experience required.

Licensure Requirement:
Certification from NCA, ASCP, ASPT, or a comparable institution is preferred. A valid driver's license and state-mandated minimum insurance coverage are required. Driving records must meet Covenant Health's minimum standards throughout employment.
