Position Overview

Position Title:
Pre-six 4D Visual Arts Lecturer

Salary Range:

A reasonable estimate for an appointment to teach a standard five-credit course is $8,282 - $10,186 (based on salary points 1-8). Compensation may vary based on instructional workload credit (IWC) valuation and course salary adjustments.

Compensation for Summer Session courses may differ from those taught during the academic year.


Percent Time:
Variable, based on assigned course load.

Anticipated Start:
Appointments are contingent on the hiring unit's instructional needs and funding availability. This recruitment is valid for initial appointments made during the academic year.

Position Duration:

Appointments are typically made for one or more quarters of the regular academic year, including Summer Session.

Position Description

The Art Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for an ongoing pool of lecturers who may be appointed to teach 4D visual arts courses at various academic levels.

Possible course topics include foundational 4D studies, digital media, digital video, new media, digital art creation, interactive art, robotics, animation techniques, and digital illustration.

The department aims to enhance its focus on creating socially and environmentally engaged artwork. Selected candidates should possess a significant exhibition history and professional experience with a contemporary approach to visual arts.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated ability to engage with students from diverse backgrounds.
  • A multidisciplinary approach that integrates various art practices, including interactive installations, digital video, animation, sound art, and physical computing.
  • A comprehensive understanding of visual art practices encompassing performance, social practice, and the intersections of design, art, science, and technology.

Department Qualifications
Basic Qualifications (required at time of application):
  • M.F.A. or Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree) in a relevant field; or four years of equivalent professional experience in artistic and creative work with a national and/or international record of performances, exhibitions, or installations.
  • University or college teaching experience.
