Santa Cruz, California, United States University of California, Santa Cruz Full time

Position Overview:
The University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) is seeking applications for a continuous pool of lecturers to instruct sections of College 1, the introductory course within UCSC's Academic Literacy Curriculum.

Course Objectives:
College 1 serves as a mandatory foundational course aimed at equipping students with essential academic and civic skills in reading and critical analysis.

Students will cultivate an understanding of the "academic ethos" and develop the cognitive habits and practices that contribute to a sense of belonging and academic achievement.

This course is designed to prepare students for success in their subsequent UCSC coursework. Notably, there is no placement assessment for College 1; enrollment is not contingent upon proficiency in reading, writing, or critical thinking.

Instructor Responsibilities:
Instructors will engage with a seminar group of 25-30 students two to three times weekly, delivering content from a predefined syllabus. Responsibilities include:

  • Assigning and assessing student work
  • Facilitating small group discussions
  • Preparing grades, which may include narrative evaluations of student performance
  • Holding weekly office hours
  • Performing other standard instructional duties

Basic Qualifications:
Applicants must meet the following criteria at the time of application, with no exceptions:

  • M.A./M.S. degree; or a B.A./B.S. degree with at least one year of a Ph.D. program; or a B.A./B.S. degree with a minimum of two years of college-level teaching experience. Equivalent international degrees will be considered.
  • Experience in teaching critical and analytical reading, thinking, and/or writing at the collegiate level.

Preferred Qualifications:
Applicants with any of the following qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply:

  • Ph.D. (or equivalent international degree) in a field relevant to the aforementioned areas of focus.
  • Proven track record of excellence in teaching critical and analytical reading, thinking, and/or writing at a four-year institution.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students from diverse social, cultural, and academic backgrounds.
  • Familiarity with contemporary theories and research in academic literacy and discourse pedagogy, or related fields.
  • Professional expertise or research in liberal arts, or a history of creative or research endeavors.

Diversity Commitment:
Demonstrated awareness of the challenges faced by traditionally underrepresented groups and your past and/or anticipated contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion through teaching and professional or public service are essential.

Please note that the hiring unit will not sponsor employment-eligible immigration statuses for this position. Internal candidates will receive priority consideration.
