Overview
As a key member of the Dallas County team, the Lead Juvenile Detention Officer plays a vital role in overseeing the safety and well-being of youths within a 24-hour detention facility. This position is responsible for guiding and mentoring staff while ensuring the effective implementation of residential programs.

Management Responsibilities:
In the absence of the shift supervisor, the Lead Juvenile Detention Officer may take on additional responsibilities to ensure smooth operations.

Core Responsibilities:
Provide direct supervision to youths, ensuring their health, safety, and welfare at all times. Act as a mentor and leader, offering both individual and group counseling to enhance personal accountability and awareness of alternatives.

Utilize sound judgment and decision-making skills during critical situations, performing crisis intervention as necessary and promptly communicating any concerns to supervisory staff.

Enforce facility rules and document behavioral incidents, forwarding necessary information to appropriate personnel. Train and assess staff performance while maintaining accurate attendance records in the absence of a shift supervisor. Transport youths to appointments as required.

Serve as a support to staff by fulfilling various duties, including administering medications, processing intake assessments, and managing disciplinary actions.

Physical capability to perform required techniques, including restraint and pursuit of youths, as mandated by applicable standards.

Conduct regular inspections, rounds, and drills, including room checks and physical searches of youths. Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED equivalent is required, along with two years of relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, are essential for establishing effective working relationships with colleagues and the public. Must possess current Red Cross First Aid/CPR certification or obtain it within 90 days of hire. A commitment to ongoing training, with a requirement of 40 hours annually, is necessary. Certification in accordance with facility standards is also required. A valid driver's license with a clean driving record is mandatory, along with the ability to pass a comprehensive background check. Drug testing is a prerequisite for employment and will continue throughout the duration of employment.

  • Position involves working with juveniles who may exhibit aggressive behaviors; a high tolerance for emotionally demanding environments is essential.
  • Transfers to different departments, shifts, or facilities may occur based on departmental needs.
  • Working in a 24-hour facility may necessitate mandatory overtime or additional shifts.
  • Employees may be classified as 'essential personnel' and could be required to return to work at any time.
  • Applicants must be at least 21 years old and successfully complete all required training to maintain employment.

Work Environment:
This role is conducted within a secured facility, with potential exposure to various health risks. The ability to restrain and/or pursue youths is necessary, and transportation of youths may be required.
