Overview
As an Entry-Level Juvenile Detention Officer, you will be responsible for providing direct oversight to young individuals within a 24-hour detention center.

Key Responsibilities
In this role, you will ensure the daily supervision of youths in a secure environment, prioritizing their health, safety, and well-being in accordance with departmental policies and established standards.

You will engage in both individual and group counseling sessions aimed at enhancing personal accountability and exploring alternative choices.

During critical situations, you will be expected to make sound judgments and decisions, escalating issues to your supervisor when necessary, while meticulously documenting all actions taken.

You will enforce facility rules and regulations, documenting behaviors and forwarding relevant information to the appropriate personnel.

Your duties will also include restraining, pursuing, or assisting unruly youths as needed. Regular inspections, rounds, and drills will be part of your responsibilities, which include conducting room checks and physical searches of the youths. You will also be tasked with transporting youths to various appointments and coordinating daily educational and recreational programs and activities. Additional duties may be assigned as required.

Qualifications
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED is required.

A minimum of three (3) years of relevant work experience or completion of forty-five (45) college credit hours in a related field, or a combination of both, is preferred.


Skills and Requirements:


Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, are essential for establishing effective working relationships with colleagues, departments, and the public.

You must obtain First Aid/CPR Certification within 90 days of employment and achieve necessary certifications as mandated by applicable standards within six months of hire. A valid driver's license with a clean driving record is required. Candidates must pass a thorough background investigation and are subject to mandatory drug testing prior to employment, as well as random drug and/or alcohol testing during employment. Flexibility in shift assignments is also necessary.

  • This position involves working with juveniles who may exhibit aggressive behaviors; a high tolerance for emotionally demanding situations is essential.
  • Employees may be reassigned to different departments, shifts, locations, or facilities based on departmental needs.
  • Working in a 24-hour facility may require mandatory overtime or extended shifts.
  • Employees may be classified as 'essential personnel' and may be required to remain on duty or return to work as needed.
  • Successful completion of all physical and written components of the Juvenile Academy is necessary to maintain employment.

Work Environment:
This position is conducted within a secured facility, with potential exposure to various health risks. The ability to restrain and/or pursue youths is required, and transportation of youths may necessitate the use of a vehicle.
