Overview: The Chief Executive Officer of UNC Faculty Physicians is instrumental in connecting UNC Health's clinical excellence with the academic prowess of the UNC School of Medicine, ensuring a harmonious integration of these essential domains. This role reports to both the Chief Clinical Officer (CCO) and the Chief Academic Officer (CAO), emphasizing the dual commitment to improving patient care and advancing academic initiatives.

Key Responsibilities under the Chief Clinical Officer:

  • Management of Clinical Operations: The CEO guarantees that all clinical operations of UNC Faculty Physicians are executed effectively and efficiently, delivering superior patient care while upholding the organization’s reputation as a leading academic practice. This includes overseeing clinical performance metrics such as quality, productivity, and satisfaction levels among patients and faculty.
  • Promotion of Clinical Integration: Through strategic partnerships with leaders across UNC Health, the CEO spearheads integration efforts of the Faculty Practice across various entities, particularly focusing on the UNC Medical Center. The CEO will advocate for the growth of system service lines to enhance integrated care delivery.
  • Collaboration Across UNC Health: Building strong relationships with key leaders throughout UNC Health is essential to ensure that operations align with broader organizational goals.
Key Responsibilities under the Chief Academic Officer:
  • Leadership of Clinical Chairs: The CEO plays a pivotal role in guiding the Clinical Department Chairs of the UNC School of Medicine, participating in recruitment, annual evaluations, and aligning departmental strategies with academic priorities.
  • Enhancement of the Academic Environment: The CEO is dedicated to fostering a supportive academic environment, promoting research and educational activities of faculty, ensuring clinical practices align with academic objectives.
  • Facilitation of Academic Integration: In collaboration with the CAO, the CEO ensures that clinical and academic missions are mutually reinforcing, leveraging faculty innovations in patient care.
  • Academic and Leadership Engagement: As a member of the Academic Council, the CEO leads the Chairs' Committee, ensuring effective meetings that support institutional goals and foster collaboration among department chairs.
Operational Duties:

  • Responsible for the strategic direction and operational activities of UNC Faculty Physicians, ensuring alignment with system objectives.
  • Collaborates with the President of UNC Hospitals to enhance patient care, operational efficiency, and workforce engagement.
  • Partners with research leaders to advance clinical trials.
  • Oversees the implementation of organizational goals and policies across clinical departments.
  • Ensures consistent understanding and administration of policies.
  • Manages the financial performance of UNC Faculty Physicians, accountable for meeting operating margin targets.

Qualifications:

  • MD or DO degree from an accredited institution, board certified in the relevant discipline.
  • Active state medical license without encumbrances.
  • 12 years of progressively responsible experience in a hospital or large healthcare system, including 10 years in people management.
  • Deep understanding of complex healthcare systems and regulatory environments.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills for relationship building with physicians and administrative leaders.
