Position Overview

Under general supervision, the incumbent will undertake complex financial, statistical, and accounting recordkeeping tasks. Responsibilities include preparing and assisting in the creation of financial statements, documents, analyses, and reports. The role also involves maintaining accounting records and systems, as well as performing related duties as necessary.

Key Responsibilities

The Accounting Technician role is characterized by the necessity for independent judgment and interpretive skills. The incumbent will be responsible for maintaining a variety of intricate departmental fiscal records and will often act in a lead capacity.

Typical Duties Include:
  • Compiling and interpreting data for budget preparation in a large department.
  • Supervising and participating in the maintenance of records within accounting systems for fund appropriations and expenditures.
  • Assisting in the development of financial record-keeping forms and methods.
  • Initiating fund transfers and interdepartmental billing.
  • Preparing complex statistical and accounting reports from diverse sources.
  • Reviewing employee time cards and tracking vacation and time off.
In the Auditor/Controller Department, duties may include:
  • Assisting in the review and auditing of computer-based accounting documentation for accuracy.
  • Balancing accounts and researching discrepancies.
  • Notifying departments of errors and necessary corrections.
  • Maintaining general ledger and appropriation ledgers.
  • Interpreting and applying detailed instructions.
Essential Skills and Knowledge:
  • Understanding of basic budget preparation procedures.
  • Familiarity with methods and practices in fiscal and accounting work.
  • Knowledge of governmental accounting principles.
  • Ability to prepare accurate financial statements and analyze data.
  • Capability to maintain complex records and coordinate the work of others.
Minimum Qualifications:

Three years of responsible technical experience in financial, accounting, or statistical recordkeeping activities. Formal education in basic accounting or bookkeeping may substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis.
