Research Scientist - Sustainable Horticulture

Position Overview

A postdoctoral research associate opportunity is open in the Organic and Sustainable Vegetable Cropping Systems laboratory. The selected candidate will collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to conduct research on organic strawberry cultivation, soil disinfestation techniques, and nutrient management strategies for watermelon production. Responsibilities include executing field and laboratory experiments to assess plant health, crop yield, fruit quality, soil health metrics, and nutrient uptake efficiency. The role also involves data analysis, presenting findings at academic conferences, preparing reports and manuscripts, and assisting with project management and outreach initiatives. This position is structured for a two-year commitment to ensure project completion.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • PhD in Horticultural Sciences, Plant Science, Soil Science, or a related field
  • Experience in both field and greenhouse settings, along with laboratory expertise
  • Knowledge of vegetable crop nutrient management and fertilization
  • Familiarity with pest and disease management in vegetable crops
  • Experience with environmental monitoring tools
  • Proficient in statistical data analysis using software such as SAS or R
  • Demonstrated publication record in peer-reviewed journals
  • Strong organizational, communication, and teamwork skills
  • Commitment to research integrity and the mission of the Land-Grant system


Preferred Qualifications:

General expertise in vegetable production systems, organic farming practices, soil health assessment, and integrated pest management. Familiarity with data analysis software such as JMP and/or R is advantageous. Project management experience is also preferred.
  • Experience in analyzing soil properties
  • Knowledge of plant nutrition and water relations
  • Experience in stress physiology research
  • Familiarity with environmental monitoring technologies
  • Experience in strawberry and watermelon production
  • Proficiency in multivariate analysis techniques
