WATER UTILITY MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN

Exempt: No Reports to: Foreman
Hours: 40 per week
SUMMARY: This position involves performing semi-skilled tasks in the construction, upkeep, and repair of water and reclaimed water utility systems. The technician will operate various equipment related to assigned duties, which include customer interactions for new meter installations and service repairs. Responsibilities encompass hydrant maintenance, meter troubleshooting, service taps, and addressing main breaks. The technician will also investigate and resolve water quality concerns, alongside other related tasks as necessary. Supervision is provided by the Utility Foreman.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Utilizes power tools such as cut-off saws, water main tap machines, chain saws, weed eaters, power drills, reciprocating saws, pneumatic boring tools, generators, and air-powered equipment.
- Maintains readiness for on-call rotation as required.
- Responsible for the upkeep, cleaning, refueling, and organization of vehicles; ensures inventory is stocked with necessary parts and equipment.
- Repairs and replaces malfunctioning potable and reclaimed water meters; addresses low water flow and quality complaints; troubleshoots and fixes water leaks; tests water meters for flow and accuracy.
- Manages inventory, stocks new and existing parts and materials; oversees city-issued electronics such as cell phones and laptops; reports inventory levels to the supervisor. Maintains power tools including saws, pumps, drills, etc.
- Performs intermediate plumbing tasks, including repairs involving PVC, pipe fittings, polyethylene tubing, and threaded-pipe.
- Handles repairs and replacements of water service lines, mains, and meters.
- Acts as essential personnel during natural or man-made emergencies.
- Completes other assigned duties as necessary.
- Possesses a valid Florida Driver's License.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To succeed in this role, the individual must effectively perform each essential duty. The following qualifications represent the knowledge, skills, and abilities required. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: A graduate of an accredited high school or equivalent diploma, along with six months of experience in water utility maintenance, construction, or a closely related field. The individual must be in good physical condition and capable of understanding and following directions. Within one year, CPR/AED certification is required, and availability for on-call work rotation is mandatory after the probation period.
REASONING ABILITY: The applicant must demonstrate the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions provided in written, oral, or diagrammatic forms. The applicant should also be able to address problems involving multiple variables in standardized situations without immediate supervisor guidance.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Familiarity with tools, equipment, and materials used in the maintenance, repair, and installation of water meters and service lines is preferred.
- Ability to learn street layouts and meter locations within the service area.
- Capacity to establish and maintain effective working relationships as required by the role.
- Proficiency in completing reports and work orders with clear penmanship.
- Effective and courteous communication skills with the public.
- Ability to mentor other employees to enhance their work performance.
- Basic literacy and numeracy skills.
- Ability to work independently and diligently.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/ADA: This role requires walking, standing, pushing, bending, stooping, operating equipment, and driving. The employee will work outdoors in various weather conditions. Responsibilities may involve working with moving vehicles and/or equipment, as well as working from heights, in dusty conditions, and handling chemicals.

Hearing: Normal to very high noise levels
