WATER UTILITY MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN

Hours: 40 per week
OVERVIEW: Engages in semi-skilled tasks associated with the construction, upkeep, and repair of water and reclaimed water utility infrastructures. Operates machinery relevant to assigned duties. The role necessitates interaction with customers during new meter installations and service repairs. Responsibilities include maintaining hydrants, diagnosing meter issues, service connections, and main line breaks. Additionally, investigates and resolves water quality concerns, performing related tasks as necessary. Supervision is provided by the Utility Foreman.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- The following functions are indicative of the tasks performed within this role. It is not exhaustive of any single position within the classification. The absence of a specific function does not prevent management from assigning related duties as appropriate.
- Utilizes power tools such as cut-off saws, water main tapping machines, chainsaws, weed eaters, power drills, reciprocating saws, pneumatic boring equipment, generators, and air-powered tools.
- Maintains readiness for on-call work status.
- Responsible for the upkeep, refueling, and organization of vehicles; ensures inventory is stocked with necessary parts and equipment.
- Repairs and replaces malfunctioning potable and reclaimed water meters; addresses low water flow and quality complaints; identifies and fixes water leaks; tests water meters for accuracy and flow.
- Manages inventory, stocking new and existing materials; oversees city-issued electronic devices including mobile phones and laptops; reports inventory status to supervisor. Maintains power tools including saws, pumps, drills, etc.
- Performs intermediate plumbing tasks, including repairs involving PVC, pipe fittings, polyethylene tubing, and threaded pipes.
- Repairs and replaces water service lines, mains, and meters.
- Acts as essential personnel during emergencies and natural disasters.
- Completes other assigned duties as required.
- Possesses a valid Florida Driver's License.
QUALIFICATIONS: To successfully perform this role, an individual must be capable of executing each essential duty effectively. The requirements listed below represent the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to fulfill the essential functions.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Must be a graduate of an accredited high school or possess an acceptable equivalency diploma, along with six months of experience in water utility maintenance, construction, or a closely related field. The individual must be in good physical condition and able to comprehend and follow directions. Within one year, CPR/AED certification is required, and availability for on-call work rotation is mandatory after the probation period.
REASONING ABILITY: The applicant must demonstrate the ability to apply common sense to follow instructions provided in written, oral, or diagram formats. The applicant should also be capable of addressing problems involving multiple variables in standardized situations when immediate guidance from a supervisor may not be accessible.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Familiarity with tools, equipment, and materials used in the maintenance, repair, and installation of water meters and service lines is preferred.
- Ability to learn street layouts and meter locations within the service area.
- Capability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as required by the job.
- Ability to complete reports and work orders with legible handwriting.
- Effective and courteous communication skills with the public.
- Ability to instruct other employees to enhance their work performance.
- Proficient in reading and writing.
- Ability to work independently and diligently.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: This position involves walking, standing, pushing, bending, stooping, operating equipment, and driving. The employee will work outdoors in various weather conditions. Tasks may require working in proximity to moving vehicles and/or equipment, as well as working from heights, in dusty conditions, and with hands, feet, and/or legs in water, while handling chemicals.
