The Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) is in search of experienced, passionate, and dedicated educators to contribute to the development and implementation of a cutting-edge four-year medical curriculum that actively engages students in innovative learning experiences.

Position Overview:

AWE is inviting applications for a full-time, non-tenure track position in Cognitive Science. The selected candidate will collaborate within an interdisciplinary team to provide students with a comprehensive training experience. Foundational sciences will be integrated throughout the entire curriculum. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a history of excellence in teaching within medical education and possess the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues across various phases of education. This role will involve working alongside other clinical and basic science faculty to develop clinical scenarios that highlight fundamental scientific concepts and contribute to the creation and evaluation of assessment materials. The preferred candidate should have expertise in multiple relevant disciplines, including:

  • Cognitive Science
  • Neurophysiology
Position Classification:

This position is available at the Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor levels, with the rank assigned based on experience and qualifications.

Key Responsibilities:

Curriculum Development: Oversee the creation and integration of all content related to Cognitive Science or Neurophysiology, including the formulation of clinically relevant narratives and various assessment tools, such as NBME-style multiple-choice questions and evaluations of student performance in active learning environments.

Instruction and Facilitation: Engage actively in student instruction, developing and delivering content through active learning methodologies. Collaborate with faculty to create, deliver, and pre-record flipped classroom materials. Facilitate both small and large group active learning sessions, serving as a facilitator for small group discussions, including case-based learning (CBL) and other small group activities.

Assessment and Evaluation: Establish learning objectives aligned with foundational sciences and map them to the curriculum. Utilize appropriate metrics and assessment techniques to ensure students achieve these objectives. Collaborate with faculty and staff for ongoing quality improvement of courses, sessions, activities, and assessments.

Service: Actively participate in leadership roles and committee memberships within the educational institution (e.g., Curriculum Committee, Admissions Committee, etc.).

Professional Growth: Engage in professional development initiatives to enhance teaching, educational, and other skills necessary for fulfilling responsibilities.

Additional Duties: Perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

A doctoral degree (MD, DO, PhD, MD/PhD, or equivalent) with specialized training/experience in cognitive science, neurophysiology, or a closely related field.

Minimum Experience Requirements:
  • Experience in designing, developing, and delivering Cognitive Science content in higher education
  • Evidence of teaching excellence in higher education
  • Experience in curriculum development, review, or implementation in higher education
  • Participation in interdisciplinary team projects
Preferred Experience and Qualifications:
  • More than two (2) years of experience in an LCME or COCA accredited undergraduate medical education or nationally accredited postgraduate education programs with a focus on Cognitive Science, Neurophysiology, or a related field
  • Demonstrated expertise in medical education, including curriculum development, assessment tool formulation, and delivery in the field of Cognitive Science or Neurophysiology
  • Experience in designing, delivering, and evaluating an integrated foundational science course
  • Familiarity with various educational technologies and active learning methodologies
  • Understanding of diverse assessment methods
  • Experience with various adult learning techniques (e.g., CBL, PBL, TBL, small groups, simulation, etc.)
