We are currently seeking candidates to fill existing roles within the Community Support Department. Current openings are available in various locations for the Community Support Department.

We are also creating a candidate pool for future opportunities within the Community Support Department, Sheriff's Office, and Public Defender's Office. Positions may arise in multiple locations. Candidates interested in roles with the Sheriff's Office or Public Defender's Office must be flexible and willing to work at All Locations throughout the region. To be considered for future opportunities in these offices, applicants must indicate "All Locations" in their application.

*NOTE: The Community Support Department may appoint candidates at the Senior Community Support Specialist level if they meet the qualifications of a Community Support Specialist plus two years of relevant experience and based on departmental needs and discretion.

ROLE DESCRIPTION: Under supervision, performs social work and related duties as required.

Incumbents in the Community Support Department will initially work under close supervision during training and are expected to learn departmental structure, community support programs, case study methods, and casework services, progressing to independent work within one year. Trainees assigned to protective services may engage in more complex social service tasks. Upon completing training, incumbents are expected to perform at a journey-level capacity. Incumbents manage a complex caseload in areas such as child protective services, adult protective services, and in-home supportive services.

Incumbents in the Public Defender's Office for this role will work within the Community Defender Division. The Community Defender Division (CDD) is committed to providing compassionate advocacy and services for clients while pursuing systemic changes to enhance the lives of vulnerable populations. CDD integrates the expertise of social workers, housing advocates, resource specialists, and attorneys to address the holistic needs of clients.

KEY CHARACTERISTICS: This role serves as the entry-level position for professional community support work. Incumbents initially work under close supervision and are expected to learn departmental organization, community support programs, case study methods, and casework services, transitioning to independent work within one year. Trainees may engage in more complex social service tasks. Upon completing training, incumbents are expected to manage a complex caseload effectively.

Responsibilities Include:
  • Conducting in-home or on-site assessments to interview clients and gather information regarding their needs for community support services; evaluating employment history, housing conditions, financial status, and capacity for independent living; developing service plans and maintaining case files.
  • As a protective service worker, investigating reports of abuse, neglect, or exploitation; assessing immediate risks and coordinating with other agencies and involved parties.
  • Creating service and treatment plans, evaluating client progress, and providing counseling using various modalities.
  • Guiding clients on available resources and barriers to independent living; explaining procedures and rights.
  • Assisting clients in accessing essential services for independent living; making referrals to community agencies for food, shelter, medical, and educational services.
  • Managing assigned caseloads; preparing reports and documentation regarding client status; maintaining accurate case files.
  • Assessing suitability for out-of-home care placements and conducting on-site evaluations.
Employment Standards:
  • A bachelor's degree with coursework in social work, psychology, counseling, sociology, child development, geriatrics, or related fields; OR,
  • Two years of experience equivalent to a Community Support Aide, plus relevant coursework; OR,
  • A combination of training and experience equivalent to the above, with required coursework.
Additional Qualifications: Some positions may require fluency in English and Spanish.

Additional Requirements:
  • Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License is required.
  • Independent travel may be necessary.
  • Availability for on-call work outside normal business hours may be required.
  • Positions may require bilingual skills.
Knowledge and Skills: Understanding of social service systems, human behavior principles, and report writing; ability to learn and apply complex regulations; interview diverse individuals; manage caseloads; maintain confidentiality; and communicate effectively.
