Job Summary:

The Assistant Operations Manager at Ports America is a key member of the front-line management team, responsible for directing, planning, and supervising terminal operations and staff. This includes ensuring efficient, safe, and productive operations for assigned customers, terminal area, and cargo type.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Effectively manage the work activities of foremen, labor, and other personnel to meet performance expectations and customer needs.
  • Determine labor needs and ensure timely ordering to meet operational demands.
  • Make decisions affecting overtime costs and general expenditures, prioritizing the company's and customers' interests.
  • Ensure payroll accuracy and make necessary adjustments.
  • Comply with the company's safety program and ensure all labor and staff adhere to accident prevention and workers' compensation procedures.
  • Work closely with M&R/Terminal Departments to allocate equipment and meet operational demands.
  • Maintain positive relations with labor and ensure understanding and adherence to Collective Bargaining Agreements.
  • Address performance issues, impose corrective action/discipline when necessary, and advise leadership on labor matters.
  • Participate in regular training and feedback with labor and management staff.
  • Communicate areas of accountability and performance expectations to labor and management staff.
  • Develop, maintain, and improve operating and administrative procedures to provide required information and facilitate internal practices.
  • Ensure certifications, training, and clearances are current for self and staff.
  • Follow company policies, procedures, and controls, and submit reports accurately and on time.
  • Work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as directed by business need.
  • Travel to support other operations as needed.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in any discipline or equivalent combinations of education and experience.
  • Experience with Computerized Operating Systems.
  • Valid TWIC Card issued by the Department of Homeland Security.
  • Valid US Driver's License.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of safety and accident prevention codes and regulations.
  • Knowledge and understanding of cargo stowage and stability.
  • Proficient in MS Office.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to manage time efficiently.
  • Ability to execute in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to plan and organize to ensure efficient execution of plans.
  • Ability to drive and influence the performance of others.
  • Ability to make sound decisions and respond quickly to operational issues.

Physical Working Attributes:

  • Climb up and down a ladder on a vessel multiple times within a shift.
  • Work on ships and terminal with engine equipment.
  • Work in changing hot and cold climates based on weather conditions.
  • Work in an environment that may be hazardous to persons unable to see and hear fast-moving equipment.
  • Lift, push, and/or pull up to 30lbs.
