Job Overview

POSITION SUMMARY:

This role is focused on evaluating and understanding the needs of clients dealing with substance use issues. The counselor will coordinate the creation of personalized treatment plans, lead both group and individual counseling sessions, and manage the discharge planning process. As a trusted guide and advocate, the Substance Use Counselor assists clients in recognizing and addressing their challenges.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Oversee the treatment journey of clients while providing ongoing consultation and support throughout their recovery.
  2. Engage with clients' families and significant others when appropriate, facilitating referrals to community resources as needed.
  3. Collaborate with clients to develop tailored Treatment Plans that identify issues, set goals, and outline treatment strategies.
  4. Maintain accurate documentation of progress notes to track advancements in achieving treatment goals.
  5. Conduct screenings and evaluations of substance use, offering informed recommendations for treatment.
  6. Educate clients on coping strategies and effective relapse prevention techniques.
  7. Prepare reports to inform relevant parties about the client's treatment progress.
  8. Assist clients in establishing a supportive network essential for overcoming addiction.
  9. Monitor clients' recovery trajectories to determine if adjustments to the treatment plan are necessary.
  10. Facilitate individual or group counseling sessions, actively listening to clients' experiences and providing constructive feedback, including teaching coping skills.
  11. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop treatment methodologies and assess the appropriateness of counseling services or referrals.
  12. Adhere to all organizational policies and procedures as outlined in the employee handbook, including protocols for handling client grievances and maintaining clinical records.
  13. Serve as the primary facilitator for group therapy sessions.
  14. Participate in all mandatory meetings.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

A Master's degree in a Human Services field (such as education, nursing, criminal justice, recreational therapy, social work, psychology, or human development) is required, along with:

  1. A licensed or provisionally licensed qualified mental health professional (QMHP); or
  2. Certification as a Co-Occurring Disorders Professional or Co-Occurring Disorders Professional/Diplomate from the Missouri Credentialing Board; or
  3. A non-licensed QMHP who meets the co-occurring counselor competency standards set by the department; or
  4. A QAP who meets the co-occurring counselor competency standards established by the department.

Must hold credentials in one or more of the following:

QUALIFIED ADDICTION PROFESSIONAL (QAP):

An individual who fulfills the necessary training and credentialing requirements as specified by the Missouri Credentialing Board for any of the following roles:

  • Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC)
  • Certified Reciprocal Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CRADC)
  • Certified Reciprocal Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CRAADC)
  • Certified Criminal Justice Addictions Professional (CCJP)
  • Registered Alcohol Drug Counselor-Provisional (RADC-P)
  • Registered Alcohol Drug Counselor (RADC)
  • Co-Occurring Disorders Professional (CCDP)

QMHP or Qualified Substance Professional (QAP) with a minimum of 1 year of relevant experience.

Supervisor Relationship: This position does not involve supervisory responsibilities. The Outpatient Clinical Director oversees this role.
