POSITION SUMMARY:


This role is essential for evaluating and recognizing the needs of clients; orchestrating the formulation of personalized treatment strategies; leading outpatient group sessions and providing individual counseling while managing the discharge planning process.

The Substance Use Counselor acts as a trusted ally, mentor, and advocate for clients, aiding them in pinpointing issues that require attention.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the treatment journey of clients while offering guidance and support throughout their recovery process.
  • Engage with clients' families and significant others when appropriate, and refer them to community resources as needed.
  • Collaborate on the creation of tailored Treatment Plans that include problem identification, goal setting, objectives, and therapeutic methods with the client.
  • Maintain comprehensive progress notes to document advancements in achieving treatment goals.
  • Conduct screenings and evaluations related to substance use and provide treatment recommendations.
  • Educate clients on coping strategies and effective relapse prevention techniques.
  • Prepare reports to inform relevant parties about the client's treatment progress.
  • Assist clients in establishing a supportive network essential for overcoming addiction.
  • Monitor clients' recovery trajectories to determine if adjustments to the treatment plan are necessary.
  • Facilitate individual or group counseling sessions by actively listening to clients' narratives, concerns, and challenges, while providing constructive feedback and teaching coping skills.
  • Collaborate with fellow professionals to discuss treatment approaches and evaluate the appropriateness of counseling services or referrals as required.
  • Adhere to all organizational policies and procedures as detailed in the employee handbook, including protocols for handling client grievances, proper intake processes, staff meeting obligations, clinical records regulations, and overall conduct standards.
  • Serve as the primary facilitator for group therapy sessions.
  • Participate in all mandatory meetings.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
A Master's degree in a Human Services Field (such as education, nursing, criminal justice, recreational therapy, social work, psychology, or human development) is required, along with:

  • Qualification as a licensed or provisionally licensed mental health professional (QMHP); or
  • Possession of the Co-Occurring Disorders Professional or Co-Occurring Disorders Professional/Diplomate credential from the Missouri Credentialing Board; or
  • A non-licensed QMHP who meets the co-occurring counselor competency criteria established by the department; or
  • A QAP who meets the co-occurring counselor competency criteria established by the department.
Must hold credentials in one or more of the following:

QUALIFIED ADDICTION PROFESSIONAL (QAP):

An individual who fulfills the necessary training and credentialing requirements as mandated by the Missouri Credentialing Board for any of the following roles:

  • Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC)
  • Certified Reciprocal Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CRADC)
  • Certified Reciprocal Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CRAADC)
  • Certified Criminal Justice Addictions Professional (CCJP)
  • Registered Alcohol Drug Counselor-Provisional (RADC-P)
  • Registered Alcohol Drug Counselor (RADC)
  • Co-Occurring Disorders Professional (CCDP)
QMHP or Qualified Substance Professional (QAP) with a minimum of 1 year of experience.

Supervisor Relationship:
This position does not involve supervision. The Outpatient Clinical Director oversees this role.
