JOB INFORMATION
The Environmental Health Inspector I role within the Environmental Services Department is pivotal in overseeing the Asbestos, Lead, and Mold Program (ALMP) as well as the Lead Safety and Healthy Homes Program (LSHHP). Responsibilities are shared across both programs.
In the ALMP, the Environmental Health Inspector I is tasked with evaluating facilities for the presence of hazardous materials such as asbestos, lead, and mold. This includes:
- Creating management plans for asbestos.
- Assessing the necessity for contracted services.
- Drafting specifications for contracts.
- Monitoring contractor compliance with regulations from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
- Conducting training sessions on hazardous materials.
- Maintaining and updating facility information databases.
In the LSHHP, the inspector will:
- Enforce lead hazard regulations in residential and construction settings.
- Conduct lead paint inspections and risk assessments.
- Engage in outreach activities to promote lead hazard awareness.
- Utilize software for report generation and GIS mapping.
- Assist in grant management and the development of training programs.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must meet specific criteria at the time of application, including:
EXPERIENCE: One of the following:
- A valid Lead Certified Inspector/Assessor Certification from the California Department of Public Health.
- Two years of full-time experience in one of the following areas:
- Conducting inspections for asbestos and/or lead.
- Designing abatement projects with comprehensive reporting and specifications.
- Assessing environmental hazards such as mold and other hazardous materials.
CERTIFICATION/COURSE WORK: Within one year of hire, candidates must obtain:
- Lead Certified Inspector/Assessor and Lead Project Monitor Certifications.
- Completion of all required AHERA accredited coursework.
LICENSE: A valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of hire.
HIGHLY DESIRABLE:
- Possession of DOSH Certified Site Surveillance Technician (CSST) or Certified Asbestos Consultant (CAC) certification.
- Bilingual capabilities.
