Key Responsibilities*Conduct investigations into deaths that fall under the jurisdiction of the medical examiner; these cases may be intricate and specialized due to their nature.


Investigators are required to visit the scene, document findings, collect pertinent property and records, and oversee the retrieval of remains by the transport service.


Serve as a liaison between the Medical Examiner's office, health and law enforcement agencies, and the public; address inquiries regarding complaints related to Medical Examiner cases.

Perform thorough searches of public and other records when the identity of the deceased is unknown.


Compile medical records, including laboratory and imaging results from various healthcare settings, such as hospitals and clinics.

Gather additional public agency records, such as police and EMS documentation as necessary.

Collect all required information to finalize a case.

Manage requests for cremation permits.

Document the scene, including photographic evidence.

Facilitate the release of bodies to funeral homes.

Meet with the families of the deceased in the office and guide them through the identification process.

Assist in the training and mentoring of staff.

Prepare statistical and narrative reports for the Medical Examiner.

Train current and future investigators in investigative techniques and perform related duties as assigned.

Document findings in the MDI log.

Oversee the preparation of decedents for viewing.

Perform additional duties as assigned.

Ensure proper identification of the decedent and coordinate transport to the morgue.

Assist the Pathologist with the dissection of the body and its organs.

Maintain cleanliness after autopsies and manage autopsy equipment.


Required Qualifications*A valid State of Michigan Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, basic certification from the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigation (ABMDI), and one of the following qualifications to be considered at the MEI III level:High school diploma or equivalent with a minimum of nine (9) years of full-time paid experience in criminal investigations for a law enforcement agency.

Associate's degree in Police Administration, Criminal Justice, or a related field with at least four (4) years of investigative experience.

Bachelor's degree in Police Administration, Criminal Justice, or a related field with four (4) years of investigative experience.


Bachelor's degree in Police Administration, Criminal Justice, or a healthcare-related field with additional qualifications in Forensic Investigation or Forensic Science, and three (3) years of experience.

Registered Nurse with six (6) years of clinical experience, preferably in an outpatient or public health setting.

Work Schedule

This is a 24/7 operation. Shifts currently range from 10-12 hours and rotate every 12 weeks.

Shifts may vary from early morning to late night.

Modes of Work

Positions eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work are determined by the hiring department.

Work agreements are reviewed annually and may change at any time during employment.

Additional Information

This is a 24-hour operation; working weekends and holidays will be necessary.

Supervision - This position reports to the Allied Health Manager and Chief Medical Investigator

Physical Requirements - Must be able to stand for extended periods.

Must be able to access scenes of death that may include challenging terrains and structures.

Ability to lift over fifty (50) pounds.

Union Affiliation


This position is governed by the collective bargaining agreement between the University of Michigan and the AFSCME union, which addresses all matters regarding wages, benefits, hours, and other employment conditions.

Background Screening


The University of Michigan conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer, possibly utilizing a third-party administrator for screenings.

Background screenings comply with the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
