The Engineering division at Univision Communications Inc. is seeking a Director of Technology to lead our dynamic and diverse workforce.

The Director of Technology will oversee the setup, upkeep, and repair of television studio and transmitter apparatus to ensure optimal signal transmission while adhering to all FCC technical standards. This role also encompasses the maintenance of telecommunications systems, computers, networking infrastructures, and the integration of platforms for digital content.

The successful candidate will collaborate with the Univision Engineering team, supporting a prominent local news operation.

Opportunities will arise to engage with systems such as Ross Overdrive production systems, switchers, and SSL audio consoles, along with associated terminal gear and graphics technology.

YOUR DAY-TO-DAY

  1. Support and maintain a leading market news production operation.
  2. Ensure station functionality through both preventive and corrective maintenance.
  3. Supervise engineering personnel and contractors as necessary.
  4. Establish and adhere to routine maintenance protocols and schedules for all broadcasting equipment.
  5. Guarantee compliance with applicable FCC regulations and local, state, and federal laws.
  6. Conduct essential performance measurements of equipment.
  7. Install and maintain control consoles, routers, recording devices, microphones, digital audio systems, transmitters, antennas, and control systems.
  8. Provide maintenance and support for computer networks and related systems.
  9. Perform basic HVAC troubleshooting and maintenance, including water cooling systems.
  10. Collaborate with the TV news and Operations department to maintain broadcasting equipment as required.
  11. Work with the local Finance Lead to develop and manage engineering operational budgets and provide insights for reporting.
  12. Assist in formulating short and long-term strategies to enhance the station's capabilities in alignment with business objectives and evolving market demands.
  13. Coordinate with corporate engineering on new technologies, corporate initiatives, and implementation strategies.

YOU HAVE

  1. A BSEE, BS in Information Technology/Computer Science, or ASEE, or equivalent relevant experience in the Broadcast Industry.
  2. Technical training or experience with a proven track record in Broadcast or closely related fields.
  3. FCC General Class License, SBE Certifications, Computer Networking certifications (CompTIA+ or CCNA), and VMWare certification preferred.
  4. Experience in maintaining and troubleshooting high-power TV transmitters and antenna systems, along with a comprehensive understanding of ATSC encoding, modulation, and signal analysis techniques.
  5. Experience in supporting Live Television Production activities.
  6. A minimum of ten (10) years of hands-on experience in Television/Radio Broadcast engineering, including supervisory roles in both unionized and non-unionized settings. Strong communication and team leadership skills are essential.
  7. Willingness to work nights, weekends, and holidays on short notice as required, and participate in on-call broadcast-critical escalation.
  8. A valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  9. Solid understanding of relevant FCC regulations.
  10. Proficiency in applicable software packages (Microsoft OS and Office Suite).
  11. Working knowledge of computer networking technologies.
  12. Ability to troubleshoot broadcast equipment at the component level.
  13. Familiarity with Ross, SSL, VizRT, and Weather Company software/hardware products is advantageous.
  14. A collaborative mindset, with a commitment to completing repairs and assignments promptly.
  15. Capability to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks concurrently.
  16. Knowledge of generators and UPS systems.
  17. Ability to read and interpret design documentation, including elevations, connection diagrams, and schematics.
  18. Capacity to maintain documentation in line with changes.
  19. Proficiency in Spanish is a plus.
  20. Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform tasks such as standing, walking, climbing, bending, reaching, and sitting for extended periods.
