Job Summary

This position is accountable for registering patients in an accurate and timely manner by obtaining individual identifying and biographical data following appropriate check-in processes. This position rotates departments, including emergency, outpatient, and labs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Schedules appointments as deemed appropriate by the department and performs patient registration activities, including preregistration, obtaining insurance information, medical and demographic data, and entry of diagnostic ICD-9 and/or ICD-10 CPT coding.
  • Answers phones and directs calls in a courteous and efficient manner.
  • Relays information to patients and family members according to HIPAA Regulations.
  • Prepares patient liability estimations for both pre-service/scheduled services and walk-ins.
  • Prioritizes work effectively.
  • Utilizes effective communication skills to incorporate Spectrum Health standards while providing service to patients, colleagues, other departments, and physician offices.
  • Operates standard office equipment, including Microsoft systems, calculators, photocopiers, fax machines, and CD burners.
  • Works with the Pre-service Center and/or physician's office to obtain or change authorizations required per Imaging protocols or script compliance.
  • Transports and escorts patients via wheelchair as needed.
  • Informs patients of delays in appointment times when requested.
  • Calls the physician/physician's office/Quest labs when patients arrive without a script or required labs.
  • Participates in safety initiatives and risk mitigating measures where appropriate and completes all position and unit safety-related competencies and requirements on a timely basis.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Initializes and assists patients with required paperwork associated with each department.
  • Monitors and reviews all diagnostic scripts from physicians to ensure the correct exam is performed and billed.
  • Creates CDs of patient exams and digitizes images into the PACS system.
  • Handles and prepares CD requests for other healthcare facilities and physicians.
  • Calls patients prior to procedural testing to confirm appointment and prep information.
  • Operates standard office equipment, including Microsoft systems, calculators, photocopiers, fax machines, and CD burners.
  • Monitors inventories related to the job and orders accordingly.

Qualifications

Required:

  • High school diploma.
  • Communication skills.
  • Knowledge of ICD-9 and ICD-10 CPT coding, medical terminology, and/or revenue cycle knowledge.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks.
  • Knowledge and experience with a variety of information systems, experience with spreadsheet and word processing software, and keyboard proficiency.

Preferred:

  • 1 year of relevant experience in a customer service role or healthcare industry.
