We are currently seeking a knowledgeable instructor to fulfill the role of Mexico Course Coordinator, contributing to the Area Studies Division at the Foreign Service Institute.

Course Objective

The primary aim of this course is to equip foreign affairs professionals with the requisite area knowledge to effectively engage with Mexico.

This course offers participants a comprehensive understanding of the historical and cultural dynamics that have shaped contemporary Mexico, alongside the critical issues influencing its domestic and international trajectory, particularly in relation to the United States. The curriculum encompasses an exploration of Mexico's political and economic landscape, as well as current U.S. policies impacting bilateral relations. The course employs a mix of lectures, discussions, field excursions, documentaries, and interactive activities, supported by assigned readings.

Key Responsibilities

The course spans five consecutive days for subregional offerings and five non-consecutive days for language-focused area studies, with multiple sessions scheduled throughout the year. The selected coordinator may also be called upon to lead additional courses, potentially including in-person delivery at the Foreign Service Institute.

The Course Coordinator's responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Overseeing the organization and execution of the course, whether virtually or in-person.
  • Ensuring adherence to instructional design principles and responsiveness to guidance from leadership.
  • Utilizing standardized templates and branding for course materials to maintain a cohesive classroom experience.
  • Delivering substantive presentations remotely and being prepared to substitute for scheduled speakers as necessary.
  • Facilitating guest lectures, leading discussions, and presenting study materials.
  • Employing diverse instructional techniques to foster effective learning in an online environment, including presentations, discussions, group activities, and self-study resources.
  • Identifying and coordinating with qualified guest speakers from various sectors for course enrichment.
  • Maintaining up-to-date course materials, including presentations, prior to each session.
  • Meeting with leadership for planning and review sessions to enhance course delivery.
  • Collaborating with support staff to ensure the online classroom is properly set up and resourced.
  • Encouraging student participation in course evaluations to gather feedback.
Qualifications
  • PhD preferred; Master's degree required.
  • Demonstrated expertise and recognition in the field, evidenced by publications, media engagements, or teaching experience.
  • Experience in instructional design and delivering engaging training for adult learners, with a preference for online course delivery.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively under tight deadlines.
  • Proficiency in creating polished course materials free of errors, adhering to provided templates.
  • Availability to meet course scheduling requirements.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including PowerPoint, Word, and Excel.
  • Familiarity with online learning platforms.
  • Fluency in English is required; proficiency in the local language is advantageous.
