The Study of Early Education Through Partnerships ( SEE-Partnerships ) at the University of Virginia seeks a Research and Data Specialist to join its highly collaborative, interdisciplinary team. Working closely with partners in Virginia, the SEE-Partnerships team conducts research focused on early childhood education policies that support early educators and improve access to high quality early learning opportunities. This position can be in-person, hybrid, or fully remote.

Responsibilities
The Research and Data Specialist will support SEE-Partnerships' research, including data management, analysis, reporting, and visualization. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in social science research, experience working with survey and administrative datasets, and the ability to work both independently on data tasks and collaboratively with other team members to refine products and analyses. Strong communication and statistical programming skills are critical.

Duties Will Include:

  • Process, merge, and analyze data collected through large-scale surveys and administrative datasets from the Virginia Department of Education and other educational agencies.
  • Produce tables, charts, and data visualizations to address needs of partners at the Department of Education and community organizations.
  • Review other team members' code to ensure accuracy.
  • Create documentation outlining data processes and/or datasets.
  • Identify and describe trends or patterns in datasets with support from faculty and senior staff.
  • Work with team members to draft briefs, reports, academic papers, and other deliverables targeting diverse audiences including policymakers, practitioners, and researchers.
  • Provide regular project updates through various modes of communication (e.g., email, team meetings).
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
Minimum Requirements
Education: Bachelor's degree
Experience: At least 3 years of relevant experience. Master's degree will be considered in lieu of experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • A master's degree in public policy, education, economics, statistics, data science, mathematics, sociology, psychology, computer science, or a related field OR a bachelor's degree with at least two years of post-graduate experience.
  • Experience working with large-scale data in a research or professional setting.
  • Excellent coding skills in Stata, R, SAS, or other similar statistical software.
  • Experience implementing processes to ensure accuracy of data and analyses (e.g., data validation, quality assurance, code reviews).
  • An understanding of data confidentiality principles to ensure data security.
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with topics related to early childhood and/or social policy.
  • Strong coding skills in Stata.
  • Experience working with education data.
  • Experience with other software commonly used in social science research, such as ArcGIS, QGIS, Tableau, Power BI, or Qualtrics.
Anticipated Hiring Range : $60,000 to $75,000 (commensurate with qualifications) with UVA benefits .

Physical Demands
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
