Sr. Associate Director of Development, FJHM Central

Baltimore, United States Johns Hopkins University Full time

Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) supports Johns Hopkins’ focus on research, teaching and patient care, and its role as a national and global leader in higher education. We create and foster enduring relationships that result in advocacy and philanthropic support for Johns Hopkins University & Medicine—strengthening the institution through partnerships with donors, alumni, volunteer leaders, faculty, students, staff, and patients. The Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine (FJHM) is the dedicated development and alumni relations team supporting the entities that comprise Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM), including clinical departments, hospitals, satellite clinics, and the School of Medicine. We contribute to Johns Hopkins Medicine’s mission of patient care, research, and education through securing philanthropy, building and maintaining donor and alumni relationships, and supporting institutional priorities. FJHM partners closely with institutional leaders, faculty, and clinicians to engage alumni, patients, donors, and prospects in JHM’s work to advance medicine and improve the human condition. FJHM Central is a collective of teams that support the engagement of Johns Hopkins Medicine prospects and donors through event planning and execution, stewardship and donor relations, development communications, central fundraising, and principal gifts strategy. FJHM Central enjoys an upbeat, collaborative, supportive office culture and prioritizes collegiality, diversity, creativity, and teamwork. Regardless of their title or main job function, FJHM Central team members roll up their sleeves and pitch in when their colleagues are in need. The Senior Associate Director of Development will play a leading role in the planning, implementation, and management of major gift fundraising from grateful patients and unaffiliated prospects for institutional priorities and initiatives that do not fall to a specific department or division. Serving as a thought partner for the Senior Director of Development and partnering with development staff, institutional leaders, faculty, care providers, administrators, and volunteer leaders across Johns Hopkins Medicine, the Senior Associate Director will identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of prospects for the Department of Nursing, the Office of Well-being, the Presidents of The Johns Hopkins Hospital and The Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, among other priorities that may arise. Due to the central orientation of this role, the Senior Associate Director will need to be a strong collaborator and maintain a broad base of institutional knowledge. Key responsibilities: Create and implement a clear road map to drive and increase annual and major giving to meet ambitious revenue and activity goals. Develop a comprehensive understanding of programs and priorities in need of support and a keen ability to articulate these needs verbally and in writing. Serve as primary liaison to the Senior Vice President of Nursing, President of JHBMC, and Chief Wellness Officer; partner with the Senior Director as liaison to the president of JHH. Motivate, educate, train, and successfully guide these institutional leaders through the development process to maximize their impact as fundraising partners. Make presentations at faculty, finance, or clinical staff meetings. Work with the Senior Director to develop an ambitious annual work plan to track meaningful prospect and donor visits and substantive interactions. Performance targets also include benchmarks for funds raised, proposals developed and submitted, and portfolio penetration. Build and maintain a robust portfolio of 125 individual (affiliated and non-affiliated), foundation, and corporate donors through cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship, including written and verbal communication and personal donor visits. Analyze data to identify unaffiliated donors with the capacity and inclination to support Johns Hopkins Medicine. Manage the design and production of case statements, major proposals, outreach/solicitation letters, stewardship reports, and other cultivation and informal materials for prospects and donors. Supervise the Assistant Director of Development and oversee the creation of their materials and reports. Support them in improving annual fundraising and engagement strategies, particularly for the Friends of Medicine and Department of Nursing. Establish their annual goals, evaluate their performance, and provide guidance and support. Foster cross-divisional/departmental partnerships with other development offices (DOFFs) at FJHM to identify joint-interest donor opportunities and/or offer temporary fundraising support for DOFFs needing additional manpower when time allows. All FJHM team members are expected to volunteer to work at the annual School of Medicine Alumni Reunion Weekend, Live the Mission and Precision Experiences, and other events throughout the year. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree. Five years professional related experience. This position does not allow for an equivalency. Preferred Qualifications Experience soliciting major gifts preferred, ideally in an academic/medical setting. Ability to work independently, manage projects and determine priorities, and to maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality. Ability to work with broadly diverse groups of constituents to achieve fundraising goals including donors, alumni, faculty, department directors, hospital and university administration, fundraising colleagues and institutional leadership. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team. Excellent writing, editorial, and verbal communication skills. Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Strong computer literacy skills and ability to learn new software. Ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. Positive demeanor, desire to work as part of a team, and a sense of humor.
