Baltimore, United States InsideHigherEd Full time

Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) supports Johns Hopkins' focus on research, teaching and patient care, and its role as a national and global leader in higher education. We create and foster enduring relationships that result in advocacy and philanthropic support for Johns Hopkins University & Medicine; strengthening the institution through partnerships with donors, alumni, volunteer leaders, faculty, students, staff, and patients.

Johns Hopkins University supports a flexible work model which includes four different work modalities. This role has a hybrid work arrangement with an onsite presence of 3 days per week. The manager will confirm the team's core onsite days where the majority/all team members will work in the office. Employees who travel on university business can count those days towards their onsite days.

The Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine (FJHM) is the dedicated development and alumni relations team supporting the entities that comprise Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM), including clinical departments, hospitals, satellite clinics, and the School of Medicine. We contribute to Johns Hopkins Medicine's mission of patient care, research, and education through securing philanthropy, building and maintaining donor and alumni relationships, and supporting institutional priorities. FJHM partners closely with institutional leaders, faculty, and clinicians to engage alumni, patients, donors, and prospects in JHM's work to advance medicine and improve the human condition.

The Institute for Basic Biomedical Sciences is engaged in a transformative opportunity to develop and implement a vision for a new Life Sciences Building and Corridor (LSB/LSC) that will create a new, modernized ecosystem for discovery research that spans multiple schools, departments, divisions and programs across Johns Hopkins University and Medicine. The goals of this project are to:

  • Solve the most challenging questions about how biology sustains life and dysfunction gives rise to disease
  • Revitalize and develop basic science research facilities along the Life Sciences Corridor
  • Create Technology Hubs and Scientific Neighborhoods that span the Life Sciences Corridor to turbocharge the pace, scope, and impact of research

To harness the full potential of this opportunity and secure philanthropic support to activate these goals, the Senior Associate Director will work with the Director of Development to execute fundraising strategies that support the research and educational needs of the Institute for Basic Biomedical Sciences and the LSB/LSC. The Senior Associate Director will identify, cultivate, solicit and steward annual and major gifts, primarily focusing on past donors, graduate alumni and former postdocs, and unaffiliated prospects. The Senior Associate Director will work with the Director of Development and IBBS faculty, as well as across departments and schools, and will lead fundraising efforts for select programs and initiatives. Travel is required.

Key responsibilities:
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding and keen ability to verbalize the research and educational missions and clinical implications of the Institute for Basic Biomedical Sciences, the new Life Sciences Building and Corridor, and their components, including nine departments and four scientific neighborhoods.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of all trainee programs under the auspices of the IBBS and work with the Director of Development, program directors, and Director of the IBBS in building and implementing a comprehensive development and engagement plan.
  • Lead fundraising for specific departments and programs within IBBS and the LSB/LSC as assigned reflecting specific dimensions of the tripartite mission of Johns Hopkins Medicine (e.g., research, teaching). This includes graduate fellowships to support the next generation of scientists in training.
  • Assist with coordination and staffing of the IBBS Advisory Council, as well as with the identification and recruitment strategy for new members, in partnership with the Director of Development, the department directors, and the Director of the IBBS.
  • Staff, educate, and train faculty and staff to engage them as fundraising partners and successfully guide them through the development process.
  • Utilize an annual work plan to track prospects and activity. Work with the Director of Development to advance a comprehensive program to identify and qualify new prospects with a focus on the graduate alumni pool, manage a pipeline of new prospects and current donors, initiate gift strategies, cultivate relationships, and solicit, upgrade and steward prospects through personal and virtual visits and written communication.
  • Build and manage a portfolio through the full donor cycle, with the goal to personally solicit, or arrange for volunteer or institutional solicitation, for major gift support to fund the priorities of the IBBS and LSB/LSC. The portfolio focuses on individual donors with capacity in the 5-7 figure range.
  • Foster cross-divisional partnerships with other departments in the School of Medicine, other schools and programs involved in the LSB/LSC, Regional Development, Foundation Relations, Prospect Management and Research, and Gift Planning to identify joint-interest donor opportunities.
  • Travel as needed for prospect visits; up to 25% of time annually.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Five years professional related experience.
  • Experience soliciting major gifts preferred, ideally in an academic/medical setting.
  • Ability to work independently, manage projects and determine priorities, and to maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Ability to work with broadly diverse groups of constituents to achieve fundraising goals including donors, alumni, faculty, department directors, hospital and university administration, fundraising colleagues and institutional leadership.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team.
  • Excellent writing, editorial and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong computer literacy skills and ability to learn new software.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Sense of humor.
