Position Overview:

As our Associate Director of Member Engagement, you'll lead the charge in driving member engagement through innovative programs and initiatives. In this dynamic role, you'll design and execute creative strategies aimed at enhancing the value of STS membership, with a focus on improving recruitment and retention. By building strong relationships with surgeons and collaborating across departments, you'll ensure that our membership offerings resonate with early-career surgeons and meet the evolving needs of our diverse member base.

As our Associate Director, you'll oversee the membership staff and operations, playing a pivotal role in shaping the future of STS membership. You'll leverage insights from our members and industry trends to inform data-driven recommendations on membership policies and initiatives, ensuring that our strategies remain aligned with our organizational goals. Position Responsibilities:
  • Design and execute a membership strategy in alignment with the Strategic Plan.
  • Develop new member programs, services, products, and benefits in partnership with surgeon leaders and other internal and external stakeholders, with special emphasis on enhancing value for early career surgeons.
  • Leverage insights from STS member research and other member organizations to identify innovations that enhance member value and promote recruitment and retention.
  • Monitor and use business intelligence and data analytics to make data-driven recommendations on improving the member experience and streamline membership operations, policies, procedures, and initiatives.
  • Serve as the staff liaison to the Council on Member Engagement, and oversee staff support of the Council's Workforces and Task Forces.
  • Collaborate with the Thoracic Surgery Directors Association, Thoracic Surgery Residents Association, and Thoracic Surgery Student Medical Association on early career engagement initiatives.
  • Supervise Membership Department staff.
  • Work with the Marketing and Communications Department on Society membership recruitment and retention strategies.
  • Develop and manage the Membership Department budget.
  • Regularly review STS Bylaws regarding Society membership to ensure that they are congruent with current membership trends and the Society's Strategic Plan.
  • Oversee STS customer service channels, including responses to member inquiries and requests.
Experience and Skills
Position Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree, preferably with a strong writing focus, or equivalent experience is required.
  • 8+ years of experience in member or affiliate services and operations, preferably in a professional association. Experience in developing member engagement strategies and managing a team. Experience in health care and working with physicians or other health care professionals is preferred.
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
