We’re looking for a very experienced Software Engineer to join our Site Reliability Team and help us build and scale the Intellum platform as we continue to grow and support more people through their learning experience. Summary The Lead Software Engineer for the Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) team is essential in driving high standards of reliability, performance, and stability. This role is for an experienced engineer with a strong track record in scaling platforms and implementing best practices. The ideal candidate will excel in deep software engineering and troubleshooting complex issues. They must possess strong architectural skills, with the ability to simplify and optimize complex areas of the codebase through pragmatic solutions that not only address immediate challenges but also simplify and optimize the codebase for long-term maintainability. As a leader, you will set benchmarks for operational excellence and spearhead platform enhancements. Our stack Applications written in Ruby on Rails and Node.js, using PostgreSQL and MongoDB for storage, Redis, Memcached, Elasticsearch, WebSockets, etc. CI/CD stack based on GitHub Actions, Spinnaker and Jenkins Infrastructure as code with Terraform and Ansible Multiple cloud providers: AWS and Google Cloud Responsibilities Lead the Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) Team: Set clear goals and priorities aligned with business objectives. Collaborate with the Director of Systems Engineering to develop and execute strategies that enhance technological capabilities across the company. Drive Performance Improvements: Work on critical areas of the codebase that require performance enhancements and thorough documentation. Take ownership of key system components such as Queues, Enrollments (processing millions of transactions), Lookback rules, etc. Optimize System Performance: Continuously assess system performance, identify bottlenecks, and implement data-driven improvements to the infrastructure and applications. Ensure Platform Reliability: Ensure all platforms and systems operate smoothly, maintaining high availability, scalability, and fault tolerance. Implement best practices for continuous monitoring, preventive maintenance, and rapid response to issues. Monitor Infrastructure: Oversee virtual infrastructure and participate in a 24x7 on-call rotation to respond to critical alerts. Empower Developers: Ensure developers have access to the best tools and platforms to facilitate efficient coding practices and gain insights into application performance. Educate Engineering Teams: Provide guidance on best practices for writing performant code and troubleshoot problematic areas. Educate the broader engineering team to improve overall code quality. Lead Incident Management: Develop and refine incident management protocols. Lead efforts to troubleshoot and resolve high-impact issues, minimizing downtime and preventing future occurrences. Collaborate Across Teams: Work closely with other engineering teams and departments to understand their needs and ensure platform initiatives align with and support overall company goals. Required Skills Extensive Experience: 10+ years as a software engineer, with 5+ years of experience developing Ruby on Rails applications. Cloud Expertise: Strong experience with cloud computing platforms, specifically Amazon Web Services (AWS) and/or Google Cloud. Leadership: Proven experience in leading teams, with the ability to set direction and inspire team members. Database Proficiency: Expertise with SQL databases, particularly PostgreSQL. Codebase Familiarity: Ability to dig into and understand unfamiliar codebases quickly. Documentation & Training: Skilled in documenting solutions and training operational teams on how to effectively support and maintain systems. Team Collaboration: Comfortable working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment with strong communication skills. Proactive Problem-Solving: Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly, seek help proactively, and take ownership of tasks, leading them to completion. Bonus Skills Automation Tools: Experience in developing solutions using server automation tools such as Ansible. CI/CD Expertise: Experience in writing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines and services.
