Now Hiring:

Grants Manager

Reports to:

Director of Mission Investment & Communications

Position Status:

FT, Exempt

Salary:

Annual salary starting at $62,000; based on related skills & experience.

Office in Charlottesville, VA.

ABOUT PIEDMONT HOUSING ALLIANCE

Piedmont Housing Alliance’s mission is to create affordable housing opportunities and foster community through education, lending, and development. We are the backbone affordable housing organization in the region and operate through a collaborative approach as evidenced through a broad range of partnerships from new housing development to recently jointly opening Charlottesville’s first Financial Opportunity Center. Our work reflects our core values of Equity, Opportunity, Home, Community, and Respect. Over the last five years, Piedmont Housing has increasingly deepened its focus on racial equity as a primary lens for the organization’s work – internally, programmatically, and through advocacy - and we strive to become an anti-racist organization.

We define anti-racism as a practice – a continual, active effort to identify, evaluate, and dismantle the beliefs and structures that perpetuate racism.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Grants Manager, in partnership with members of the Mission Investment & Communications team, will serve as a visionary partner in leading Piedmont Housing Alliance’s grant-seeking activities—from opportunity identification through proposal development, submission, and compliance. The Grants Manager will proactively identify potential funding opportunities, lead teams of internal and external stakeholders to prepare competitive proposals, gather and write content for applications, and ensure that the organization is focused on maximizing public and private grant revenues through aggressively pursuing funding aligned with Piedmont Housing Alliance’s mission, values, and programs. The Grants Manager reports to the Director of Mission Investment & Communications and serves as a resource to Piedmont Housing staff, while also developing strong external relationships with our public and private funding partners.

Piedmont Housing Alliance strives to operate as an antiracist organization across all areas—our internal practices, our external connections, and the impact we make on our region. All team members work to implement justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion practices.

Piedmont Housing Alliance is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

We are committed to building a team that uplifts and values inclusive policies and equitable practices. Candidates of all races, ethnicities, nationalities, religions, genders, sexual orientations, ages, and abilities are encouraged to apply.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Proactively identify, qualify, and develop funding sources to support existing and planned program activities. This includes researching and responding to public and private grant opportunities that align with the organization's mission and programs.

Prepare and submit competitive requests for external funding from federal, state, and private funding agencies, which may include:

- Writing, editing, budget development, and logistical support - Distilling complex program guidelines and regulations into easily understandable funding priorities, parameters, and timelines - Convening funding teams of subject matter experts - Seeking assistance/content from colleagues across the organization - Managing the proposal development process – whether serving as lead or supporting key personnel/external partners – and providing guidance (including detailed proposal timelines and follow-up) for colleagues involved in each collaborative proposal

Ensure compliance and accurate reporting for all grant-funded programs, including collecting, analyzing, tracking, monitoring, and reporting data on the performance of program activities.

Work collaboratively with internal teams and external stakeholders, including public and private funding partners. Build strong relationships with program managers and staff to create open communication channels, establish upcoming deadlines, and receive feedback on submissions.

Create and manage grants calendar, including recurring and new funding opportunities, including maintaining primary responsibility for grant schedules, tracking, monitoring, and reporting.

Serve as a critical member of the Mission Investment & Communications team, working collaboratively with colleagues across the organization to promote and facilitate a culture of philanthropy and active grant-seeking

Strengthen organizational culture by engaging in full staff activities, contributing to a culture of openness and respect, and actively identifying, evaluating, and dismantling the beliefs and structures that perpetuate racial inequities.

Participate in and contribute to staff meetings.

Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

This role requires an organized, high-energy individual who takes initiative and welcomes a challenge. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, efficient, and accurate, with exceptional communication and interpersonal skills and a passion for the nonprofit sector and affordable housing.

Must be an exceptionally strong writer—persuasive, clear, and efficient—as well as an excellent editor.

Proficiency in researching, collating, and analyzing diverse data.

Knowledge of best practices in prospect identification and relationship development.

Strong financial acumen and ability to develop complex budgets.

Strong problem-solving skills: ability to think quickly, critically and strategically.

Organized and detail-oriented, able to manage multiple projects and deadlines, with the ability to focus simultaneously on both big-picture strategy and hands-on implementation.

Motivated to work in a results-oriented, industry-leading environment with high expectations for quality and speed of work.

Ability to meaningfully engage with issues of racial equity and inclusion.

Demonstrated ability to learn quickly, be self-directed, and take initiative.

Exceptional interpersonal skills and human relation skills that positively benefit interactions with co-workers, internal and external clientele.

Effective comprehension skills, with the ability to understand information and ideas presented through written and verbal communication with individuals at all levels.

Positive attitude, trustworthiness, personal integrity, and honesty.

Ability to work autonomously and understand when a superior needs to be involved in decisions.

Experience working in diverse communities with a clear understanding of multi-cultural contexts and racial equity practices.

QUALIFICATIONS

While this position leads several vital areas of our work, it is not our expectation that candidates have a mastery across all areas; instead, we encourage candidates to apply who have self-awareness and humility around areas they will need to grow in and the motivation and aptitude to lead the learning required to hit the ground running.

Bachelor’s degree in a related field of study preferred.

3+ years of grant prospecting and writing; federal and state grant experience strongly preferred.

Knowledge of fundraising principles and non-profit operations, with a successful track record of securing funding.
