Georgetown University’s

Division of Comparative Medicine (DCM)

oversees the Research Resource Facility (RRF) which supports animal research and teaching activities for the Georgetown University Medical Center (GUMC) and the Main Campus. Its mission is to provide state of the art facilities and quality animal care to support biomedical research and teaching missions of the University, and to comply with all applicable animal welfare regulations and guidelines. DCM also advises and educates researchers, staff and students on animal models and biomethodology while promoting best practices for the responsible use of animals.

Job Overview

The Animal Care Technician II, a member of the Division of Comparative Medicine’s animal husbandry function, provides support for our animal research initiatives in duties that include but are not limited to:

- Perform diligent and responsible animal care for laboratory animals, including routine and specialized duties including feeding, medicating, cleaning, restraint and transportation; and review, comprehend, and comply with all SOPs and quality assurance standards.
- Monitor daily animal health and welfare activities while performing animal health observations; maintain accurate records and documentation of procedures performed according to SOP; clean and sanitize the animal facility as well as assigned animal rooms; and maintain and repair animal caging and support equipment as needed.
- Receive, examine, transfer, identify and properly house incoming shipments according to SOPs; and safely handle animals and equipment exposed to hazardous (biohazardous, radiological or chemical) agents, and dispose of hazardous materials.
- Follow standard operating procedures and maintain compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

Work Interactions and Work Mode Designation

The Animal Care Technician II fulfills animal husbandry duties as directed the Animal Care Supervisor (their direct supervisor), as well as the Facility Manager and Director of the Division of Comparative Medicine. Their work supports Georgetown University’s research vision and mission by providing a compliant and ethical research facility to conduct biomedical research.

They are a contributing and accountable member of the Husbandry staff team, interacting with and assisting other animal care technicians, veterinary technicians, veterinarians and research faculty and staff in a professional and solution oriented manner.

This position has been designated as On-Campus. Please note that work mode designations are regularly reviewed in order to meet the evolving needs of the University. **Qualifications**:

- High School diploma or equivalency
- At least 2 years of animal husbandry or related animal care experience
- Verbal and written communication skills to read and follow instructions in English
- AALAS technician certification at the ALAT level or equivalent educational qualifications
- Availability and willingness to work weekends, snow/emergency days and University holidays

The Animal Care Technician II works in a designated area, but also spends a significant amount of time in the animal facility where they he/she could be exposed to biological hazards, chemicals, and laboratory animals. They lift 50 pounds, work in hot and/or steamy environments, work with animals/animal odors, and perform work that involves repetitive bending, twisting and pushing motions.

Essential The Animal Care Technician II is considered essential personnel and is required to work weekends, snow/emergency days and University holidays.
