As a vital member of the Humane Society of the United States, you will assist the Customer Care Manager and the Director of Pet Support in fulfilling daily operational goals related to animal care and community engagement. Your role will involve working closely with the public to address a variety of animal-related concerns, contributing to our mission of enhancing animal welfare and promoting responsible pet ownership.
Key Responsibilities
- Welcome every visitor and volunteer at our facility with warmth and professionalism.
- Provide timely and courteous assistance to inquiries regarding shelter policies and programs, both in person and via phone.
- Schedule appointments for animal intake and conduct surrender counseling for pet owners.
- Carry out animal care tasks, including cleaning animal habitats and providing care for neonatal animals as necessary.
- Process documentation and maintain accurate records for animals that are surrendered or reclaimed.
- Ensure that our animal management system is updated with all relevant information regarding intake, discharge, adoptions, and fostering.
- Verify that all animals have appropriate identification and kennel cards.
- Conduct basic health assessments for incoming animals and administer necessary vaccinations, ensuring accurate record-keeping.
- Coordinate transportation for animals requiring urgent medical attention.
- Assist in creating lost pet reports and support customers in their search for lost animals.
- Maintain cleanliness in the front desk area and public spaces.
- Report any suspected cases of animal abuse or neglect to the appropriate authorities.
- Provide information to potential adopters and guide them through the adoption process.
- Perform general office tasks, including answering calls, data entry, and educating the public about responsible pet ownership.
- Regularly check and respond to internal communications.
- Report maintenance issues to the appropriate supervisor.
- Complete necessary paperwork for spay and neuter procedures and schedule surgeries as required.
- Offer guidance and support to volunteers and community service participants.
- Undertake additional duties as assigned by management.
Qualifications
- Strong customer service and communication skills are essential, along with experience in handling both domestic and wild animals.
- Candidates must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, with exceptions made for medical or religious reasons.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds independently and more with assistance.
- Capability to perform physically demanding tasks regularly, including lifting, bending, and reaching.
- Comfort in working with a variety of animals, including cats, dogs, and other species.
- Ability to manage interactions with the public, including potentially challenging situations.
- Occasional exposure to distressed or dangerous animals and other challenging conditions.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays, as needed.
Education
- A high school diploma or GED is required.
