Veterinary Technician

Role Summary: The Humane Rescue Alliance (HRA) is seeking a skilled veterinary technician to become an integral part of our dedicated medical team. This role involves delivering comprehensive medical care and monitoring the health and welfare of animals within our medical facility. HRA is committed to providing a wide array of animal welfare services, including care for shelter animals and offering affordable veterinary services to the community.
The veterinary technician will play a crucial role in ensuring that each animal receives compassionate and humane treatment. Responsibilities include delivering essential medical care, providing guidance on animal health, and supporting the mission of HRA through client education and care.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical Duties
- Conduct wellness appointments, administering vaccinations and performing routine health assessments.
- Assist veterinarians in diagnosing and treating illnesses, gathering patient histories, and addressing client concerns.
- Educate clients on animal health, treatment options, and proper care practices.
- Administer medications and maintain accurate records, including controlled substances.
- Respond to emergencies, providing first aid and CPR as necessary.
- Deliver nursing care, including wound management and monitoring vital signs.
Animal Care in Shelter
- Perform health evaluations and vaccinations for shelter animals on a daily basis.
- Support veterinarians with daily health checks and monitor the well-being of animals.
- Provide comprehensive care for hospitalized animals, including feeding and medication administration.
- Communicate behavioral concerns to the appropriate teams.
- Assist in the humane euthanasia process when required.
Diagnostic Responsibilities
- Collect and prepare laboratory samples for analysis.
- Conduct in-house screenings and manage radiographic imaging in compliance with safety standards.
Surgical Support
- Prepare animals for surgical procedures, including pre-operative assessments and anesthesia administration.
- Monitor anesthesia during surgeries and assist with post-operative care.
- Maintain sterilization protocols for surgical instruments.
Administrative Tasks
- Maintain accurate patient records and assist with administrative duties as needed.
- Participate in equipment maintenance and inventory management.
- Engage in ongoing education and training opportunities.
- Ensure compliance with safety and humane treatment protocols.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of two years of experience as a veterinary technician, with a preference for high-volume surgical experience.
- Strong technical skills in veterinary practices, including medication administration and laboratory procedures.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication skills and a commitment to customer service.
Physical and Work Environment Requirements:
- Ability to lift and move animals weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Comfortable working with a variety of animal species in diverse conditions.
- Willingness to engage in physically demanding tasks on a daily basis.
