Position Overview

Role Summary: The Humane Rescue Alliance (HRA) is seeking a skilled veterinary technician to enhance our dedicated team of medical professionals. This role is pivotal in delivering essential medical care and monitoring the health and well-being of animals within our medical facility. HRA is committed to providing comprehensive animal welfare services to the community, including care for shelter animals and affordable veterinary services for the public.

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Care and Appointments

  • Conduct wellness appointments, administering vaccinations and routine health assessments.
  • Assist veterinarians during illness consultations, gathering patient histories and addressing concerns.
  • Educate clients on animal health, care practices, and disease prevention.
  • Administer and document medications, maintaining accurate controlled substance logs.
  • Respond to emergencies, providing first aid and CPR as necessary.
  • Deliver nursing care, including wound management and monitoring vital signs.

Shelter Animal Management

  • Perform health evaluations and vaccinations for shelter animals.
  • Support veterinarians with daily health checks and monitoring of shelter animals.
  • Care for hospitalized animals, ensuring their needs are met.
  • Communicate behavioral needs to the appropriate teams.
  • Assist with euthanasia procedures as required, following certification.

Diagnostic Procedures

  • Collect and prepare laboratory samples for analysis.
  • Conduct in-house screenings and manage sample submissions to reference labs.
  • Capture diagnostic radiographs in compliance with safety guidelines.

Surgical Support

  • Prepare animals for surgical procedures, including health screenings and anesthesia induction.
  • Monitor anesthesia during surgical procedures and recovery.
  • Maintain cleanliness and sterilization of surgical instruments.
  • Assist with the surgical admission and discharge processes.
  • Perform dental care tasks as needed.

Administrative Duties

  • Maintain and update patient records and care plans.
  • Assist with inventory management and equipment maintenance.
  • Participate in ongoing education and training as required.
  • Ensure compliance with humane care protocols and safety standards.
  • Represent HRA professionally in all interactions.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of two years of experience as a veterinary technician; high-volume surgical experience preferred.
  • Proficient in technical skills related to veterinary care.
  • Strong knowledge of animal handling and safety practices.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Computer proficiency in relevant software applications.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Commitment to the mission of HRA and compassionate care for all animals.

Physical and Work Environment Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds unassisted.
  • Comfortable working with a variety of animal species.
  • Capable of performing physically demanding tasks regularly.
  • Exposure to various environmental conditions typical of animal care settings.
