About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Animal Care Specialist to join our team at the Smithsonian National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute. As an Animal Care Specialist, you will play a critical role in ensuring the health and well-being of our animals, and contributing to the conservation of species.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide daily care and maintenance of animal enclosures, including cleaning, feeding, and providing fresh water.
  • Monitor animal behavior and report any signs of illness or stress to the Curator or Veterinarian.
  • Assist with animal training and enrichment programs to promote animal welfare and stimulate natural behavior.
  • Collaborate with other animal care staff to ensure seamless animal care operations.
  • Participate in animal handling and restraint procedures, including catching and handling animals by hand or using nets.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate's or bachelor's degree in a related field (e.g. biology, zoology, animal science) preferred.
  • At least 1 year of experience in animal care, preferably in a zoo or wildlife setting.
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects (up to 100 lbs) and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills, with ability to work effectively with colleagues and supervisors.
Working Conditions

This position requires working outdoors in all weather conditions, with exposure to dirt, dust, pollen, and insects. The Animal Care Specialist will also be required to climb ladders and stairs, and stand and walk for extended periods.
