The American Dental Education Association (ADEA) seeks to add a talented Senior Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion to its team of high performing professionals. 

This exciting position is perfect for an experienced program administrator with a comprehensive understanding of issues in academia, enrollment management, and DEIBJ (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Belonging, and Justice) within dental education, the oral health profession, and the academic health professions. Reporting directly to the Chief Diversity Officer, the Senior Director excels in project management, including strategic operations, project timelines, and reporting functions. They take pride in producing timely and innovative work products that promote DEIBJ initiatives in oral health, such as workshops, conferences, presentations, leadership trainings, webinars, and publications. 

 Our ideal candidate is a strong communicator, effective in both written and oral language and able to interact proficiently with students, residents, fellows, faculty, staff, internal leadership and external stakeholders. These stakeholders include dental schools, allied dental education programs, oral health associations/organizations, academic health profession leaders, foundations/corporations, and government agencies. 

 The Senior Director of DEI supervises the Program Manager of Access, Diversity and Inclusion (ADI) and manages the work functions of temporary employees within the division. They cultivate and develop positive working relationships with diverse constituencies both internally and externally, engaging with stakeholders at higher education institutions, dental associations, government agencies, and other health professions settings. 

 Additionally, the Senior Director of DEI is a strong thought leader in DEIBJ and serves as a key advisor and support partner to both the ADEA Chief Diversity Officer and Vice President of DEI. 

 Primary Responsibilities 

ADEA Council of Students, Residents, and Fellows (COSRF) & ADEA Chapters (50%) 

  •  Serves as the ADEA staff liaison to the ADEA Council of Students, Residents, and Fellows (one of the seven ADEA governance councils), providing administrative support, including managing Council affairs and ensuring compliance with ADEA bylaws, policies, and procedures. 
  •  Serves as the ADEA staff liaison for ADEA Chapters for Students, Residents and Fellows (ADEA COSRF Chapters).  
  •  Supports the COSRF administrative board in planning and executing student programming for three key ADEA meetings: the COSRF Leadership Orientation, the ADEA Fall Meetings, and the ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition. 
  •  Manages the annual ADEA/ADEA COSRF/Colgate Oral Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Junior Faculty Award. 
  •  Support the COSRF administrative board in drafting resolutions to amend the ADEA bylaws.  
  •  Provides regular updates and recommendations to the ADEA senior leadership and the ADEA Board of Directors in support of COSRF and ADEA Chapters.  
  •  Oversees the annual registration process of ADEA Chapters and the bi-annual Chapter survey.  
  •  Serves as the official custodian of records for ADEA Chapter registration materials and ADEA Chapter officer membership records in the Association Anywhere membership database. 
  •  Advises ADEA Chapter leaders and faculty advisors.  
  •  Develops policies and procedures for ADEA Chapters and updates the ADEA Chapter online Toolkit annually.  
  •  Co-leads the development of recruitment and retention strategies to maintain and expand ADEA Chapters at U.S. and Canadian dental schools, allied dental education programs, and advanced dental education programs. 
  •  Collaborates with the ADEA Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusive Learning to develop virtual training opportunities for ADEA Chapter leaders. 

Access, Diversity and Inclusion (50%) 

  • Leads the development, logistics, and implementation of the annual ADEA Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Workshop. 
  •  Develops programming, DEIBJ materials, and content for the ADEA Annual Session and Exhibition and other ADEA events and activities. 
  •  Collaborates with ADI and Educational Pathway staff and external organizations to support and develop pathway and pre-professional initiatives for historically underrepresented students. 
  •  Provides project support for the Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) in conjunction with the ADEA SHPEP Project Director, including activities to advance SHPEP alumni engagement, other ADEA student pathway programs, and pre-professional programming to improve the recruitment, retention, academic readiness, and health careers development of HURM students, as needed. 
  •  Creates resources and training to support DEIB and the leadership development of historically underrepresented groups in dental education, focusing on health equity, well-being, and resiliency. 
  •  Researches and writes briefs, articles, reports, and other materials on DEIB topics, emphasizing dental education and the academic health professions. 
  •  Initiates and supports programs to advance the recruitment and retention of historically underrepresented faculty, staff, residents, fellows, and administrators in dental education. 
  •  Provides programmatic support for the ADEA climate study and other initiatives to foster a more humanistic environment for faculty, students, staff, residents, and fellows in dental education. 
  •  Creates programming for allied dental education DEIB initiatives in collaboration with ADEA staff. 
  •  Develops and monitors grant budgets within the ADEA ADI portfolio and assists in grant reporting to ensure compliance. 
  •  Stays informed on holistic admissions laws/policies, emerging national/global DEIB issues, and best practices for diversifying postsecondary education, especially in dental education and the academic health professions. 
  •  Presents data and content on DEIB, health equity, inclusive pedagogy, well-being, resiliency, and recruiting and retaining marginalized groups in dental education at meetings, conferences, webinars, seminars, etc. 
  •  Collaborates with ADI staff to develop and support programming for the Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) and Men of Color in the Health Professions initiatives as needed. 
  •  Supports the planning and execution of the Student Diversity Leadership Program. 
  •  Performs other tasks and duties as assigned by the Chief Diversity Officer and/or Vice President of DEI. 
  • A graduate degree plus a minimum of 8 years of progressive relevant experience with substantive experience at the director or equivalent level in social justice or DEIBJ programming and implementation within higher education institutions, healthcare, or health professions settings.    
  • Alternatively, a bachelor’s degree in higher education, social justice, the health professions, or a related field with a minimum of 10 years of progressive relevant experience with substantive experience at the senior director or equivalent level in social justice or DEIBJ programming and implementation within higher education institutions, healthcare, or health professions settings.  
  • Previous experience in a leadership role directly related to diversity, equity, inclusion, health equity, and social justice is essential. 
  • Supervisory experience, including a minimum of 2 years of direct supervision, is required. Experience supervising multiple reports is strongly preferred. 
  • In-depth understanding and expertise in DEIB best practices in higher education and/or the health professions, with strong knowledge of health equity, well-being, resiliency, and inclusive teaching practices preferred. 
  • Sound knowledge of strategic enrollment management, student development, and strategies for recruiting and retaining historically underrepresented students, faculty, and staff in postsecondary education. 
  • Demonstrated ability to think creatively, foster innovation, and develop and expand DEIB programming to promote a humanistic environment throughout dental education. 
  • Experience in developing and implementing inclusive programs to support the leadership development and growth of historically underrepresented stakeholders in postsecondary education and/or the health professions. 
  • A highly effective detail-oriented strategic thinker with strong problem-solving skills, including the ability to anticipate, assess, gather pertinent information, and develop solution-focused recommendations. 
  • Experience working closely and effectively with higher education students and/or student organizations. 
  • Strong writing, research, oral communication, presentation, and organizational skills. 
  • Discretion, good judgement, professional maturity, excellent diplomacy, and the ability to handle sensitive and confidential information. 
  • Positive attitude, flexibility, strong interpersonal and intercultural communication skills.  
  • Ability to work effectively in a diverse team environment and collaborate well with others from different backgrounds. 
  • Team player capable of managing and implementing multiple complex projects for diverse audiences in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Proficiency in Outlook, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Microsoft Excel, and other applicable software. 
  • Availability by email, virtual platforms, and phone after hours, as needed and some evening and weekend work. 
  • Ability to work at ADEA’s DC office on a hybrid basis (currently three days per week). 
  • Ability to travel nationally and internationally 20%-25% overnight and occasional evening and weekend work. 

The salary range for this position is $117k to $131k.
