SUMMARY
The Director / Senior Director, Corporate Development will partner with R&D, Marketing, Market Access, Operations, Finance and other key stakeholders to help guide the vision and provide strategic leadership for portfolio planning, business development and merger & acquisition activity for the company. This individual will be accountable for establishing and executing partnerships, licenses and other business development activities focused on driving significant growth and profitability.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
- Independently spearhead business development activities consistent with innovation strategies established in agreement with the executive management team and board of directors.
- Working closely with SVP, Commercial and Corporate Development, CSO and other R&D team members as well as clinical opinion leaders, lead global search and evaluation efforts to source opportunities that complement our pipeline and platform technologies.
- Provide leadership for portfolio planning team and process.
- Develop and continuously update biopharma potential partner pipeline data, as well as partnership roadmap.
- Run partnership discussion processes including direct ownership and oversight of due diligence, drafting and negotiating term sheets, working closely with legal team on negotiating collaboration agreements and collecting feedback from various internal stakeholders.
- Lead, guide and direct teams responsible for organizing and completing extensive due diligence involving cross-functional teams of several internal and external experts.
- Lead and collaborate on business aspects of complex contract negotiations with internal and external legal counsel as needed.
- Working closely with finance team and external experts, oversee the creation and evolution of financial models that inform the valuation of external opportunities.
- Create strategic and compelling slide decks of the highest consistency and quality and use them in presenting the company externally to partners and presenting external opportunities to the executive management team and board of directors.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
No direct reporting responsibilities; leads through influence and collaboration with team members across functions.
QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate has deep experience in clinical laboratory and biopharma partnership development, as well as company mergers and acquisitions.
- Bachelor's degree in Business or a scientific discipline; MBA or higher education in a scientific discipline is a plus.
- 15+ years' experience including at least 10 years' experience in business development, with significant deal & negotiations experience in clinical laboratory, biopharma or related life sciences companies. Experience in the areas of autoimmunity and immunology are a plus.
- A thorough understanding of the processes of due diligence, asset valuation, and portfolio management, combined with deep scientific and business acumen.
- Strong capabilities in strategic analysis and communication, both written and verbal, including creating and presenting compelling slide decks.
- Demonstrated track record of leading and negotiating complex transactions at pace while managing competing priorities.
- Successful track record in independently sourcing, evaluating, prioritizing, pursuing, and onboarding high-value clinical-stage assets, preclinical assets, research platforms +/- commercial-stage assets.
- Well networked in biopharma and life science community.
- Extensive experience in managing and optimizing partnerships through deal execution and alliance management.
- Possesses strong analytical, quantitative, and financial skills, including facility with financial models and reading and understanding financial statements.
- Successful previous experience leading business development projects with a willingness to roll up sleeves and contribute very directly where needed to close deals or accomplish other objectives.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Strong Excel skills to build and manipulate complex workbooks for financial analyses and forecasting.
REASONING ABILITY
Very high skills: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Ability to travel 20% - 30% domestic.
