Position Summary
The Vice President of Finance is responsible for the financial management for CRIPCS and Community Capital Corporation (CCC), providing day-to-day oversight of areas including but not limited to budgeting, GAAP accounting, cash flow management, and local, state, and federal regulatory compliance and reporting. This role offers strategic leadership in developing and implementing internal finance policies and procedures, keeping systems current and up-to-date, and fostering strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to instill trust and confidence with our finance leadership. The Vice President of Finance will partner with school leadership across all departments to identify, develop, and implement key strategic financial and organizational projects that align with the School’s objectives.
The Vice President of Finance reports to the Chief Operating Officer and will oversee and manage the finance team made up of 3 staff members including the Accounting Manager, AP Specialist, and AR Specialist.
The Vice President of Finance will also provide training, resources, and consultation to enable and support stakeholders to be informed and responsible financial stewards and decision-makers.
In the first 6-12 months, the VP will assess the current needs and environment of the school finance function, including financial systems, policies, procedures, and make recommendations that support and further enable smooth daily operations in accounting, budgeting, and compliance reporting. The VP of Finance will assess the finance team resources, deliver accurate and timely financial statements and reports, support School leadership with effective budget development and management, and build strong relationships with stakeholders. In collaboration with the COO, they will provide strategic financial leadership to the School and the Board of Directors, and ensuring the alignment of the strategic plan with annual school goals.
Looking further ahead (1-2 years), the VP, in consultation with the COO and other School leaders, will develop strategic plans to ensure financial sustainability, and stability in alignment with the School’s projected objectives. This includes creating financial projections that account for uncertainties in public funding and building robust financial planning strategies in the short and long term. They will ensure the finance team is optimally resourced. Additionally, they will assess and refine financial systems, policies, and processes to support these goals.
Responsibilities:
Strategic Financial Leadership:
Partner with the COO and senior leadership teams of CR and CCC to collaboratively develop and execute strategic financial plans.
Align financial strategies with the organization's long-term goals, ensuring sustainability and growth.
Monitor and adapt to the funding environment, particularly public funding sources in D.C.
Cultivate relationships with regulators and maintain compliance with financial regulations.
Financial Health and Operations:
Oversee the accounting team, ensuring smooth day-to-day operations and robust financial controls.
Lead annual budgeting process in collaboration with the leadership team and board. Support and guide budget managers across the school, providing financial training and assistance.
Lead budget management for both the school and CCC, consolidating financials as required by the D.C. Board.
Review contracts for compliance with accounting policies and procedures, and for risk minimization.
Oversee cash flow planning and ensure proper application of allotted funds.
Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting, including audits, 990 filings, and other key reports.
Review financial statements and budget vs actual reports with the leadership team, and oversee the reconciliation process.
Manage vendor relationships and ensure cost-effective procurement practices.
Develop and enforce financial policies and procedures, enhancing financial systems and user training.
Oversee selection and implementation of financial systems.
Coordinate with auditors to ensure audited financial statements accurately reflect the organization.
Remain up to date on nonprofit audit best practices and state and federal laws regarding nonprofit operations.
Ensure compliance with all DC Public Charter School Board policies and work with leadership to monitor Financial Analysis Reports (FAR) outcomes.
Oversee timely and accurate financial reporting for grants, ensuring that budgets are consistently aligned in relation to financial documentation for proposals
Stakeholder Engagement and Communication:
Collaborate with COO to provide regular updates to the board and finance/development committee on financial reports and budget.
Engage with senior leadership, offering financial insights and strategic advice.
Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, instilling trust and confidence.
Equip stakeholders with training, resources, and consultation to empower informed and responsible financial stewardship and decision-making.
