Description:
This recruitment is for one (1) full-time, permanent, Region Manager for the Northwest Region South area for Parks Operations located in Tumwater, Washington or Burlington, WA . Working hours are generally Monday- Friday 8:00am - 4:30pm with the option to telework. This position may require you to travel as needed to accomplish assignments.
This position is responsible to provide oversight through their direct leadership and supervision of Park Area Managers, who in turn supervise field staff, including law enforcement, construction/maintenance, interpretive, park rangers, administrative and customer service positions. Region Managers work with the Region Superintendent and region staff to determine and advance region goals and priorities, and to recommend division and agency direction and decisions. Through that collaboration, they consider and determine operational standards and benchmarks for Park Areas. They are charged with the implementation of division and agency standards and oversee consistency and accountability for Areas in their Region.
About the position:
Every day is unique for Region Managers, and applicants should be ready to deal with a wide variety of complex, ever changing issues - from engaging with stakeholders and partners, to long term capital planning, tribal engagement, lease management, maintenance planning, law enforcement response and strategies, and crisis management. The role of a region manager is to help park area managers oversee smooth operation of parks across the state, working with multiple programs and departments within and external to Washington State Parks to preserve natural resources and public access to recreational land.
We are employee centered and encourage growth and professional development for each person at each of our park areas and region offices. The teamwork at Northwest Region is what makes the experience great for employees and the public utilizing our parks.
This position is eligible to telework but is frequently required to report on-site to meet business needs. The default assigned work location of all Parks positions - both on-site and telework eligible positions - is within the State of Washington. Frequency of onsite work will vary based on business and operational needs. Parks may choose, but are not required, to support out-of-state telework on a case-by-case basis.
DUTIES
Some of what you will do:
  • Directly supervises Park Area Managers with the goal of creating, supporting, and maintaining effective, efficient, and safe operations at all parks under their authority.
  • Established performance expectations, provides feedback, coaching and support, works towards these employees' development, conducts performance evaluations, and takes steps to ensure accountability.
  • Provides high level direction, supervision, and leadership for agency programs and projects within the Region and by being accountable for overall success including control of expenditures and ensuring timely delivery of projects.
  • Supports and coaches the Area Managers through difficult situations with employees, partners, external officials, the public, and other items.
  • Assist with the most complex and/or emergency issues happening in the Park Areas, including providing information, guidance, coordination, connection, and resources.
  • Assists Area Managers with the most difficult personnel issues, ensuring HR is involved as appropriate and the action is thoroughly evaluated for completeness, accuracy, and fairness.
  • Reviews all corrective and disciplinary action being considered in their Region with same lens.
  • Works with peers and Region Superintendents to consider and determine operational standards and benchmarks for Park Areas. They are charged with the implementation of division and agency standards and oversee consistency and accountability for Areas in their Region.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required qualifications:
Qualified candidates will meet the following criteria:
  • A bachelor's degree AND three (3) years of experience in a natural resources filed/outdoor recreation field or organization AND five (5) years of supervisory experience at a professional level AND a valid unrestricted driver's license.
Additional qualifying experience in a natural resources or outdoor recreation filed or management experience in a natural resource/outdoor recreation agency may substitute year-for-year for education.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working in a parks system
  • Experience managing budget and expenditures in a government setting
  • Experience leading employees in public-facing positions
  • Experience working with sovereign tribes
