The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (“NHMLAC”) was the first museum in L.A. to open its doors 108 years ago and is poised for an exciting new era as it plans for the future. Having recently completed a new strategic framework, the Natural History Museums of Los Angeles County—including NHM at Exposition Park, La Brea Tar Pits and museum in mid-Wilshire, and the William S. Hart Museum in Newhall—is looking forward to new building projects and campaigns, exhibitions, community outreach, and innovative audience engagement.

The NHMLAC is seeking a Coordinator, Community Engagement (Outdoor Equity) for our Education, Exhibitions, & Community Engagement department. The Coordinator, Community Engagement (Outdoor Equity) works closely with the Senior Manager, Community Engagement to co-create and co-implement the WILD LA Outdoor Equity Grant internship and In the Field content and program with the Community Science Coordinator. Provides support to WILD LA outdoor equity grant through program coordination & metrics tracking, communications & website, partnership relationship building, administrative paperwork, and anti-racism efforts in our work & field. It is an exciting time as we embark on new journeys of becoming a museum of, for, and with L.A.


Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Work closely with the Sr. Manager, Community Engagement, Community Science and the Public Programs team to research, develop and produce the new Wild LA program funded by the Parks & Recreation Outdoor Equity grant.

  • Co-development and co-facilitation of the Wild LA Internship curriculum for 15 interns during the Spring through Summer months, including ordering supplies, coordinating with Research and Collections staff and working with external partners.

  • Coordinate the six annual In the Field day trips and two overnight camping trips to various local parks, including booking transportation, ordering supplies, co-facilitating activities with guests in the field and communication with guests pre and post trip.

  • Oversees the coordination, communication and scheduling of various community partners to bring community members together for In the Field and overnight camping trips.

  • Co-produces learning materials for In the Field and overnight camping trips.


This position has the following requirements:

  • 1-3 years project management experience with educational programming and event production.

  • 1-3 years experience in working with various audiences and diverse populations. Must be outgoing and personable and possess the ability to interact effectively with students of all ages, their families, clients, staff, and other Museum visitors.

  • Communication: Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through verbally and in writing. Ability to communicate ideas verbally and in writing.

  • Computer Experience: Has experience using a personal computer and with Google Office Suite (Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Calendar, Mail, Chrome)

  • A valid California Driver License and a Personal Automobile Liability Insurance or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation needed to carry out job related essential functions.

  • Bachelor’s or higher degree in environmental/outdoor education or museum/community related field (science education, environmental justice, community organizing, biology, environmental studies, ecology, botany, geology, museum studies, etc).

  • Background or knowledge of one or more fields represented by the Museum (e.g., Biology, Paleontology, Anthropology, History) preferred.

  • Fluency in a second language is preferred. (ie. Spanish, Tagalog, Chinese or Korean)

The NHMLAC is seeking applicants who have demonstrated experience and commitment working with a diverse community. The hourly rate for this position is $23.71 with excellent benefits. This is a full time temporary, non-exempt position. The position is estimated to end September 30, 2025.
