Position description:

The Handel and Haydn Society Musical Movement Teacher is a highly-qualified teacher who educates, inspires, and engages students in weekly musical movement with musicianship components. Singers (students) are members of two H+H Youth Chorus ensembles: New Voices (grades 2-4) and Treble Chorus (grades 4-6).

The H+H musicianship curriculum uses a sound-first approach to teaching music literacy. Singers are taught pitch using moveable-do solfège (la-based minor) and rhythm using the Takadimi rhythm system. Emphasis is given to building camaraderie and connection among the singers through their musicianship studies as this is a complement to their ensemble rehearsals.

The position involves planning for and teaching two (1) 30-minute classes for New Voices and (1) 40-minute class for Treble Chorus. Musical Movement classes are held in-person in the Boston area on Saturday mornings during the school year from September through May. The end of season administrative duties complete in June.


Duties:

  • Deliver curriculum and instruction in musical rhythmic and melodic body movements in a manner that engages and excites students.
  • Maintain weekly written attendance records for all students in all assigned classes and collaborate with the Musicianship Lead Teacher to maintain accurate rosters.
  • Attend weekly musicianship faculty meetings on Saturday mornings for the purposes of developing curriculum and instructional continuity. Participate in student placement meetings as needed to be arranged with the Lead Musicianship Teacher.
  • Prepare semi-annual written and aural student evaluations and provide feedback to students and their families during the year on student progress, attendance, and other pertinent matters related to student performance.
  • Attend family orientations and other gatherings to generate interest and goodwill and explain course expectations.
  • Participate in H+H Youth Choruses faculty meetings and learning/professional development sessions organized for all H+H employees.
  • Be available to meet with Board members, donors, and funders during the year and participate in events that maintain and cultivate interest in the Education Program.
  • Act as the Handel and Haydn Society's representative at social events, educational meetings, and/or conferences.
  • Participate in mentoring teaching assistants and/or singers' leadership.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • A passion for sharing music with all people, in particular with children.
  • Minimum of two years experience teaching musical movement to early learners working in a youth educational setting, preferably at the elementary school level.
  • Degree in early childhood education music education preferred.
  • Demonstrated advanced musicianship skills. Experience with the Takadimi rhythm system, and Gordon's "Music Learning Theory" or the Kodály method is highly desirable.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to relate to and engage school-aged children and teenagers with genuine warmth and energy.
  • Strong communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Proactive approach, flexibility, and a positive attitude.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of students and their families.
  • Fluency in Spanish, Cape Verdean, Vietnamese, Haitian, or Mandarin is desirable.
  • Authentic interest in advocacy for music education and the Handel and Haydn Society.
  • Availability to work in Brookline on Saturday mornings September-May is essential.
