Sasha Bruce Youthwork (SBY) is the leading provider of homeless youth services in the DC

Region. Through the holistic integration of its Pillars of Opportunity, Sasha Bruce is able to

provide safe homes, life skills, and workforce development to meet the unique needs of homeless

youth. For more than 45 years, Sasha Bruce has implemented innovative interventions aimed at

bringing an end to youth homelessness in the DC region. Today, its programs in DC and Prince

George’s County, MD, reach over 6,500 runaway, homeless, abused, and neglected youth, and

their families.


About the PG Drop In Center


The Sasha Bruce Prince George’s County Drop-In Center, also known as the Bruce

Empowerment Zone, was established in 2021. It works to reduce the length of time that a young

person aging from 14-24 experiences home insecurity in the Prince George’s County region. By

working constantly doing outreach, the Drop-In Center fosters a safe and trusting environment

where youth can receive care. In addition to providing survival services, the Center supports

youth in their journey towards stable housing and economic independence. Services provided

include:

● Free meals and snacks;

● Hygiene supplies;

● Referrals to services such as mental health counseling;

● Substance abuse support;

● Vital records attainment;

● Public benefits attainment support;

● College and career services; and,

● Case management


Position Summary


Under the supervision of PG County Drop In Center Program Director, the Bilingual Street

Outreach Program (SOP) Coordinator collaborates with the staff at the SBY PG Drop In Center,

SBY 8th Street Drop In Center and SBY DC SOP team to conduct mobile and on-street outreach

in Washington, DC and Prince George’s County, MD. The Coordinator is expected to engage in

outreach five times per week most weeks year-round. During outreach efforts, the Coordinator

will provide an initial assessment to youth, distribute survival aid and information, and

potentially transport youth to safe facilities.


Qualifications


● Bachelors Degree in a Social Work, psychology, or a human services related field OR

High School Degree and at least two years of experience working with at risk youth,

vulnerable populations - preferably homeless populations;

● Valid driver’s license and comfort driving a van;

● Must be bilingual (Spanish);

● Must be flexible in working hours to include evenings, weekend and late time outreach; ,

● Strong communication and organizational skills required.

Reporting to the Program Director, this is a full-time, exempt level position. All candidates

must possess a valid driver’s license and have reliable transportation; pass the required

clearances; and provide any additional information regarding previous records, if necessary.


Duties and Responsibilities


● Provide street outreach on foot or in a van to engage youth who are experiencing

homelessness or are at risk for homelessness in services; with a special focus on outreach

to Spanish speaking clients and those in the LGBTQ+ community;

● Regularly update outreach strategies and locations and collaborate with the Director to

update maps/logs of outreach efforts to determine and recognize trends; outreach

locations vary and could include bus and metro stations, parks, street corners, recreation

centers, known hot spots through the district and Prince George’s county;

● Provide outreach via other avenues including tabling at events, partnering with schools

and other agencies to complete informational sessions, flyering and other events;

● Provide survival kits, resource information and crisis counseling to youth encounter at

outreach and ensure a warm-hand transfer to Sasha Bruce drop in centers, shelters or

other partners via provision of transportation;

● Create harm reduction plans with youth who are engaging in sex work, dealing with

substance abuse or are posing mental health challenges; frequently check in with youth

who have harm reduction plans;

● Make referrals to appropriate programs and/or services; provide follow-ups on referrals

and youth in a timely manner and continue to refer youth to services as needed until

housed;

● Work with youth and their contacts to develop service plans that assist youth in

addressing challenges such as legal services, employment, housing, and healthcare;

● Complete service documentation in client case records within 24-48 hours of the service;

maintain accurate, complete, and confidential case files, written documentation, reports to

track client progress and outcomes;

● Participates in regular team consultation meetings with the Program Director, case

managers, and other staff working with shared clients;

● Participate in staff meetings, trainings, conferences, regular supervision and community

outreach events as required; taking special care to ensure that 40 hours of required

training are completed annually;

● Other duties as assigned by the Program director or their designee; and,

● Must have a commitment to ending youth homelessness, racial equity, inclusion, and

issues central to Sasha Bruce Youthwork’s mission.
