POSITION:
Driver/Outreach Worker

PROGRAM/DIVISION:
Shelter Hotline Program / Community Health Division

HOURLY RATE:
$18.63 per hour

JOB SUMMARY:

The Shelter Hotline Program is responsible for transporting clients to various shelters and designated locations throughout the year, operating 18-24 hours a day.

Driver/Outreach Workers are tasked with operating UPO vehicles to provide transportation along assigned routes or designated point-to-point services.


MAJOR DUTIES:
  1. Deliver outreach and transportation services to homeless individuals and families to available shelters in the DC area.
  2. Conduct canvassing efforts in Washington, DC, to locate homeless and at-risk individuals in need of transportation and comfort items.
  3. Ensure all passengers are securely seated and provided with safety instructions to be followed during transport.
  4. Transport and escort clients to and from scheduled locations, including vacancies within the overnight shelter system.
  5. Communicate with hotline dispatchers via two-way radios to obtain resources for individuals identified as at-risk or in need of services.
  6. Collaborate with local emergency services to relocate clients from the streets to appropriate shelters.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or GED required. A minimum of two years of experience operating a 15-passenger vehicle is necessary. A valid Class D driver's license is required, and the driving record must not exceed two points over the past five years.

Candidates must be flexible to work varied schedules, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and be able to drive in all weather conditions. Strong knowledge of Washington, DC geography is essential for effective navigation.

Ability to work sensitively with individuals from diverse backgrounds is crucial. Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (Outlook and Word) and electronic time-keeping systems is expected. Strong organizational and communication skills, both written and verbal, are necessary, along with the ability to prepare reports as needed.


DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

First-Aid & CPR certification is preferred. Bilingual candidates, particularly in Spanish, are encouraged to apply.


OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Selected candidates will be required to undergo a criminal background check and/or FBI fingerprinting, as well as pre-employment drug screening, if applicable.

This position is classified as Safety Sensitive and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
Yearly tuberculosis testing is also required.
This position is part of the collective bargaining unit of the CWA Union.
