Classification: Full-Time ( 40 hours per week)

Position Purpose:

The position participates as a member of a multi-disciplinary team providing health and social services to clients of the Enhanced Services Program on Skid Row. The Lead Peer Advocate will help coordinate and enhance the peer advocacy efforts by contributing to client engagement, retention, and support. This position delivers skills-building information and assists the behavioral health team with implementing positive and supportive interventions with clients. The Lead Peer Advocate will also work with Front Desk Supervisor to ensure that all daily tasks are being completed and to train all incoming Peer Advocates along with maintaining and completing the weekly cleaning schedule.

Principal Responsibilities:

  1. Establish a rapport with clients and express a concern for their well-being.
  2. Provide leadership and guidance to a team of peer advocates, including organizing regular team meetings, facilitating communication, and fostering a collaborative environment.
  3. Offer mentorship and guidance to peer advocates, assisting them in improving their advocacy skills, active listening abilities, and empathetic communication.
  4. Develop and deliver training programs for new peer advocates, ensuring that they are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to provide effective support.
  5. Provide support to clients and motivate individuals to adhere to behavior modification program.
  6. Assist with maintaining complete updated, confidential file on the status of the client and documentation of their progress in changing personal behaviors.
  7. Contact clients on a daily basis to assess their support needs.
  8. Accompany client to health and/or social services referral, encourage compliance, and document progress on appropriate forms.
  9. Deliver education and skills-building information based on program activities and curriculums
  10. Provide supportive communication regarding incarceration, substance abuse, mental health, and other risk behaviors.
  11. Assist in collecting program data and processing program forms on an ongoing basis.
  12. Participate in JWCH’s customer service training called AIDET on an annual basis.
    1. Demonstrate an understanding of AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, and Thank You) to apply in patient encounters or team discussions.
    2. Utilize the AIDET communication framework to communicate with patients and team members in a manner that reduces patient anxiety, increases patient compliance, and improves clinical outcomes.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  1. Previous experience working with homeless persons.
  2. Strong ability to communicate with homeless individuals who are actively participating in substance abuse and other factors related to homelessness.
  3. Ability to travel and arrive to sites on time within the community.
  4. Desire to work with homeless persons.
  5. Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
  6. High School diploma or GED.
