General Description

A Product Release Engineer is responsible for owning the planning, coordination and implementation of all phases and activities involved in the release of application(s) from lower level into a production environment. The Product Release Engineer facilitates release meetings and release deployment plan based on input from multiple stakeholders within various teams. They also execute the releases. They identify priorities, conflicts, dependencies, and risks for the release. The Product Release Engineer is a technical hands-on implementation resource. The Product Release Engineer is an effective communicator, problem solver and keen negotiator.

Essential Functions

  • Facilitates release planning meetings with key stakeholders to identify proper sequencing of release packages. Ensures that issues and risks are identified, understood, and dealt with in a manner that mitigates risk to scope and schedule.
  • Defines and documents the release recommendation for each release and/or change to production. Includes release scope, schedule, deliverables, and roll back plan. Reviews release recommendation with key stakeholders.
  • Be a key stage gate for quality thru all release stages. Conduct Release Readiness reviews, Milestone Reviews, and Business Go/No-Go reviews
  • Supports release execution by monitoring and driving of each phase of the release. Validates the release as it progresses thru various release gates and test phases, alerts appropriate stakeholders of any errors or issues that need to be addressed
  • Oversees release decisions and processes in terms of big picture/cross-departmental impacts.
  • Maintains release management schedule for product specific applications.
  • Coordinates, communicates, and executes all non-production releases to various test environments.
  • Coordinates, communicates. and executes all production releases with a deploy when ready mindset.
  • Provides release coordination and communication during and after deployment.
  • Proactively manages environments including backfill as needed to ensure all environments are release ready
  • Partners with Enterprise Product Support (EPS) and the Monitoring Competency Center (MCC) on opportunities to improve monitoring, run books and post-deployment validations.
  • Partners with Quality Control Center (QCC) on Auditing process to ensure releases meet the guidelines and expectations of release management
  • Coordinates and executes all production releases. Proactively engages with EA and App Architects, DevOps and Tech Leads to understand the changing landscape for an evolving architecture
  • Leads/mentors other Product Release Managers and proactively leads, contributes to the Release Center of Competency (RCCV)
  • Participates in ARB/Cloud governance conversations as needed
  • Supports Zero-down time/Blue-green deployments and architecture.
  • Support and maintains CI/CD & Azure pipelines. Contributes to DR exercises.
  • Creates Service Now Requests (CR to production) and obtains appropriate approvals.
  • Attends change management such as CABs and deployment planning meetings to collect data and information pertaining to the release.

Education and Experience

  • Relevant software release management coordination or other process management experience. 2-6 years of previous release and/or project management experience, (Solid understanding of project management principles preferred)
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate cross-functional work teams toward task completion
  • High integrity, self-directed; ability to work independently
  • 4-6 years of experience in information systems operations environment in systems analysis or development
  • Azure Certifications – Fundamentals, Admin and DevOps Preferred. Fundamentals required within months with training. Terraform experience preferred.
  • Desired: Software or DevOps Development experience
  • Experience with software life cycle management tools (i.e. Azure DevOps. ServiceNow, etc)
  • Experience with source control management systems (i.e., Azure DevOps and Github)
  • Strong organizational and communication skills with ability to present to all levels of management
